Sailing is for Rich People only

I am fed up. Today at our sailing club it was brought to my attention that since I am not Rich, I will never be able to afford to become a "Real Sailor." Granted I know that based on my income I will never be able to afford a cruising sailing vessel. It just irks me to no end that these "Rich" people who can afford any yacht that they want can judge me and look down on me as a low class unworthy individual. I realize now why people say that sailing is only for the Rich and powerful people. I apologize for venting. Now that I know my place in society, I need to find a new qoal in life.

Get it over it..... you can't control what people say but you can control your response and your reaction reflects more on you than anything else. Why even worry comments made by others who are not family nor friends....not worth your energy. I am 61 and I hope that by the time you are 61 you can reflect on what I just pointed out.

Best to you...

Your place in society? A new goal in life? Really? Hey it CAN be an expensive hobby, but it sounds to me like you are really in the wrong club. You should see how little I spend on my boat!
Did someone actually say that to you?

Hey, welcome to the happy sailors club, we may not be wealthy but we have a much nicer outlook on life. Those that inhabit "sailing clubs" all too often have their head so far up their posterior that their outlook on life is somewhat "clouded" All too often these sailing clubs are struggling to survive yet they persist with the attitude.
The solution is to find a similarly minded individual or two and go sailing for the pleasure, not the prestige.

Re: Sailing is for Rich People only

I guess it all matters what your definition is of both “rich” and “cruising sailboat”. Don’t allow others to define these terms for you. If you challenge perceived personal attacks as they occur it will eliminate pent up emotions and you will be at peace with yourself.

Re: Sailing is for Rich People only

Please, you do yourself a great disservice if you accept definition through the eyes of others. This website is repleat with members who have / are following their dream without the benefit of great wealth and god knows there is an abundance of richies out there who can afford nice boats which they can’t sail worth a damn. No, I think you need to find a boat of your own that you can fix up over time to realize your dreams, Be patient, perseverance pays off.

I used to be rich, but owning a yacht has led to poverty....does that count?

Re: Sailing is for Rich People only

Owning a boat does not make you a real sailor. Many around the world and hard core “related” sailors are not boat owners.
Your compatriots need to get over it. Whatever it is.

Yeah, screw them.

If you want to go cruising, you can do it with little money.
I have a $2k boat that could go the Hawai'i or across the Atlantic.
I'm not going to take this boat on those trips but I might take it to Baja and back.

Re: Sailing is for Rich People only

Here's some inspiration for you. Budget cruisers living the dream on their Wharram.

Do you think they are having any less fun, or less of the cruising experience?

I think they might be having more - shush, don't tell anyone...

But you won't find them at any 'yacht club' near you - they are too busy somewhere off in the wild blue yonder where the coconuts grow, with their kids, and their dogs too

Re: Sailing is for Rich People only

I could never afford to be a member of a sailing club.

I guess that makes me lucky I don't have anyone to tell me I can't afford to go sailing.
