Re: Stack Pack Design Alternatives

I have option 1 on my boom which is a bit more than 4m long. The first string is attached at the beginning of the pack so the ??? distance on the pic is approx nil. In order to deal well with the...

Re: Cable size for 1500 W electrical windlass

FWIW in my boat the windlass is connected to the FLA house bank (50ft return distance) and connected by cables of 2x50mm2 in parallel so as to avoid loss and heat whilst keeping to manageable size.

Re: Photosensitive Prescription Glasses

My experience of light-sensitive on tri-focal was good until I realised they have a significant drawback: they aren’t as dark as real sunglasses which wears on my (quite sensitive) eyes and at night...

Re: Unfinished Teak Wood

There are lots of teak cleaning treatments, mostly with oxalic acid. I would try one of those before sanding, which will take away some thickness.

Raymarine Upgrade

I upgraded 2 years ago from the old Raytheon (20y old) to EV100. The rudder sensor existed but I replaced with the new one. I think skipping it would not secure the excellent performance the AP...

Re: Do I Really Need a Life Raft?

Every year before the start of the season I inflate manually my jackets, incl one Spinlock. Did not fail for 8 years.
Never thought of using expired gas bottle to inflate but will do this time, to...

ST60+ Intermittent

FWIW I had also an ST60 working intermittently. Culprit was a faulty connection under the mast in the cabin ceiling, connector slightly moving thus deconnecting. No pattern was observable.

Re: Free European nautical charts?

For my area, ie Denmark down to Biscay with the British Isles Navionics charges 3 large charts for a total of 750€, updates at half that every year. YMMV but I don’t think that is what I would call...

Re: 4th Reef Thoughts

With 4 reefs (since this year) and in-boom Selden reefing, I have #2 as a single line and #3 & #4 as dual line installed. I had to abandon #1 as there are only 3 sheaves at the back of the boom.
I...

Re: Help choosing new VHF

I noted you mentioned earlier about the SH1850gps which I believe is what you have. I have been searching for a new VHF that could allow integration into my Axiom and I could not find any. I resolved...

Re: Raymarine ST60 instruments and Quark box

Since it has a Nmea0183 output, you will also need a conversion cable to connect to the STNG backbone. Look up the Raymarine website, it has a wealth of technical support documentation that describes...

Re: Older sailors and boat must-have features

I’ve done this 8 years ago. The line is still there, knot still fit. I tested the system several times, works fine.

Re: Trojan T-105 Charging advice

Reading the Trojan manual, you will see the recommended voltage for each charging phase. You will notice they are quite higher than standard ones, so adjusting the standard settings on your charger...

Trojan T-105 Charging advice

Indeed. I also have T105s (4) and installed a small solar panel (78W) and a smart MPPT from Victron that will top up the batteries whenever I leave the boat and the batteries are not fully charged....

Re: Reefing blocks

You may want to create your own, Antal and Wichard sell the rings and you’ll end up with the right length. The splice is really easy to make with such dyneema ropes. Much cheaper and fit for your...

Re: Halyard attachment question

I release the halyard and attach it to the back of the boom to avoid noise more than chafing.
I used to have a Wichard D shackle that was replaced several times as it sometimes gets hard to unlock...

FWIW I have the emtrak b100 which is a transponder (emitter as well as receiver) and has N2K. It is connected to RM STNG network and Axiom. It is working really well.

Great insight, many thanks. I have ordered a N2K so its GPS could serve the network in case the one in the plotter fails. Looking fwd to seeing this dialogue, but I’ve been waiting for over 6 months...

Would a 10mm double-braid line with bowlines not be sufficient and practical, if only a meter long?

Single Handed Sailing

It’s been 2 years that I haven’t put back the jacklines, for the exact reason stated by BM and many others: being dragged by the boat is far more risky for the MOB.
I had placed 3 chainplates in...
