Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

Thanks again Methersgate. Really solid information. Ilenart that was one funny comment. Made my day. Again, glad some traditions just won't die. Ms. Goodall certainly pi$$ed off old Poseidon...

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

I'm hoping this is indeed the case. One containership captain (Master Unlimited) and one tankerman (Master Unlimiited) who sail with me have called it a day due to ridiculously tight schedules as...

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

Couldn't agree more with your second statement. My concern is with your first. If the shipowners insurance is footing the bill for these deviations I can't imagine this will end well. The stampede...

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

Yikes! I also read the professional mariners news and commentary on a regular basis. It seems with each successive rescue of a recreational sailor the animosity level is rising due to the schedules...

Re: Lowest Temperature for Bottom Paint Application

Many decades ago I worked in a marina in Rochester, NY and we regularly painted bottoms all winter. Of course this was when VOCs weren't a thing and Red Lead was real lead. The newer water based...

Re: Lowest Temperature for Bottom Paint Application

I use Pettit Vivid White. Last year was so friggin cold in April I said the hell with it and painted with the temps in the mid 30s to mid 40s. That or I wouldn't launch till June waiting for...

Re: They said it was just a lake!

Yes indeed this is the 'little' Great Lake. The picture on the left is Sodus Bay this week and the one on the right is Rochester in April. Even the McKeil Spirit stays in port for these days.

They said it was just a lake!

A little sample of some of what lake sailing looks like.

Re: Tornado ripped through Marmaris Yacht Marina

Here we go. After doing an EXHAUSTIVE search of Youtube videos here is one with several good views of the clouds. No rotation from what is visible. Also absent is the characteristic lightning and...

Re: Tornado ripped through Marmaris Yacht Marina

Very true DeepFrz. Although an EF0 is assigned in open areas where no damage would be possible. The EF1 is the same but occurs in areas where damage is possible. Broken windows, shingles gone and...

Re: Tornado ripped through Marmaris Yacht Marina

Not trying to be contentious but there is a huge difference between tornados and waterspouts. A tornado can be a waterspout but a waterspout can't be a tornado. The savage nature of tornados is...

Re: Tornado ripped through Marmaris Yacht Marina

Here is an easy way to determine the difference between a tornado and a waterspout of non tornadic origin. Notice the rotation in the clouds. Dead give away it's a tornado. The U.S. is the world...

Re: From CNN: Massive waterspout churns off Italian coast

This puny little one was about 12 miles east of us. We were a bit busy to get a good shot of two that had formed.

Re: From CNN: Massive waterspout churns off Italian coast

Holy Marconi, that's a doozy. Saw a few wimpy little ones here on Lake Ontario during the last sail of the season. This is what I was hoping to see.

Re: Two professionals in the fog: held to a high standard??

Same here Ann. When I cross the four separate shipping lanes here on Lake Ontario the big boys can do whatever they like. I will go out of my way to avoid them up to and including turn around and...

Re: GL: Hauled yet?

Well on this 43rd anniversary of the Fitz going down with all 29 aboard, it looks like a good day to be ashore on even Ontario. Damn period is the kicker.

Re: Personality types of sailors

I personally can't imagine learning anything from myself. It is precisely the variation that offers such novel ways to achieve a given goal.

Well that was interesting. There simply isn't one particular trait that any test can pinpoint. I will go out on a limb here and say the one common trait is sailors crave the different. Every...

Personality types of sailors

Just for curiosities sake, it might be interesting to learn the personality types that sail. This might reveal the differences on the type of sailing one chooses. I primarily daysail 3-4 hours with...
