Personality types of sailors

Just for curiosities sake, it might be interesting to learn the personality types that sail. This might reveal the differences on the type of sailing one chooses. I primarily daysail 3-4 hours with cruises 3 -5 days interspersed. Type INTJ. How 'bout you?

I tend toward INTJ as well.

INFP apparently? I mainly sail weekends due to the whole job thing, but when I have time, multiple day outings on the lake suit me just fine

Well, we all know Myers-Briggs has long been discredited. But it’s still fun. I’ll play

I actually swing two ways: ISTP or INTP (S/N: I like practical info, but I appreciate, and revel in, the Big Picture).

We (my spouse and I) left good incomes and a land home a few years ago, and have been cruising since then. We’ve got no real plan, and are living a frugal (financial poor ) lifestyle. For us this has meant full-time on the boat for ~1/2 the year at a time, mainly b/c we’re still in eastern Canada, so wintering on board is hard.

BTW, here’s a site with a more detailed description of who you are:

ISTP here. Long term liveaboard, marinas and anchorages. Have combined with work ashore, work afloat, and cruising. Lots of singlehanding. Have run charters for the last 13 years. Teach.

Re: Personality types of sailors

In my early twenties i applied for the police force and got knocked back. I then did a couple of years at uni. During a psychology subject i was introduced to brigs myer personality profiling. By memory I was a ENFP, I remember it very clearly stated that I was not suitable for institutional based careers, this explained not getting into the police force as they were using the same personality profiling test. I must say the profiling was right! Im 100% not suited for that line of work or University..lol. I haven't worked for anyone since i was 25.

ENFP. Seasonal sailing one summer at a time. Open waters and at least a couple of days non-stop before the next harbour/anchoring is what I'm drawn to.

ENTJ.

I enjoy sailing single-handed in wild conditions and big ocean swells, imagining my boat is a surfboard with a sail. The best compliment is when I return to port and the commercial fishermen ask if I'm insane.

I'm happiest in 12 foot swells, 30 knots of wind, heeled 30 degrees, spray in my face, second reef in my main, 50% jib aloft, and the ocean rushing down the deck restrained by only the lee coaming board.

The smaller the boat, the bigger the thrill.

I found skydiving to be rather dull after I started sailing.

I’m an INFP. My strong introversion is balanced by my wife’s strong extroversion. Over 50 years of sailing we grew from daysailing and weekending to live aboard cruising. We were never interested in racing. We are temporarily ashore for recovery from my knee surgery.

We should each enter two answers; what we think, and then what our wives think.

Some people fit neatly, some bridge categories, depending on the situation and the need. I can be one sort when sailing alone, and another in a collaborative working environment, ad enjoy both.

I asked the same question here a few years back.

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...rs-153292.html

I'm pretty much a classic INTP.

The personality types don’t define or limit one’s behavior, they describe one ‘s preferences or areas of comfort.

I learned that even though I’m a strong introvert I could behave as an extrovert at work as needed, but I paid the price. Being in large groups and being in the spotlight use up my energy and exhaust me. I need to get away to recharge. An extrovert, on the other hand, gains energy from large groups and from being in the spotlight and may need that to recharge after periods of solitary work.

Yes. That.

And yet I dislike singlehanding for more than 3-4 days. I like people. I like family.

Re: Personality types of sailors

ISTJ for me although, during my working career, I was forced to attend classes like Dale Carnegie to control the introvert part of my personality. Me extrovert wife also drags me out of my shell regularly. We live aboard 4 months out of the year and day sail 8 months.
