Re: Success stories from inexperienced buyers of large boats

Learned to sail way back in '79 when I joined the US Navy sailing on Lasers and such. Bought a 21' O'day and sailed that for a few years then retired from the USN at 37 years old. Ended up spending...

Re: Yanmar Gearbox

Agree with Keith001's answer as well as a starting point.

If that doesn't solve the problem, I'd remove and disassemble the gearbox and inspect the cone clutch and drive gears. With the cone...

Re: Hunter (Cherubini) 27 possibilities

A bit late in responding here I know, but I've lived on my '81 H27 for the past 5.5 years. You asked about possibilities, so here goes. As everyone has previously stated, these are simple, basic...

Re: CF Members Survey - Batteries Used Currently - 2019

6 12-volt Deep Cycle size 24 SLA's as 3 separate house banks, 2 size 31 Marine Cranking batteries. Overkill on a 27-foot sailboat with a Yanmar 1GM, I know. Went with the size 24's for the house...

Re: Avoid Egypt

I feel for you on this one. However, I will say that Egyptians in general are rather wonderful people once you know them and they know you. I spent 14 of my 19 years in Egypt living in Alexandria (I...

Re: Newby On The Chesapeake - Goin South

For the Norfolk, Va. area you can either anchor in Willoughby Bay and dinghy into the two marinas on the east side (watch your depth departing the Elizabeth River into the Bay's southern channel)....

Re: Yanmar 1GM Overtemp Alarm / Thermostat

Remove the thermostat and then run the engine. No alarm? You've got a bad thermostat (replace as necessary). If not, check your salt water intake thru-hull strainer on the outside of the boat....

Re: The Live aboard stereotype.

No disrespect intended, but your post indicates that you may have not actually been out checking marina slip fees for liveaboards. My liveaboard neighbors here in the marina seem to be able to afford...

Re: Leaky portholes HELP!

Don't know the age of your boat, but are you sure the leaks are coming from the outside of the boat and not from water intrusion into the coachtop sidewalls? When you pulled out the portlights was...

Re: The Live aboard stereotype.

I've just signed my first marina lease agreement as a liveaboard today (3-month lease). I have been a full time coastal cruiser for the past two years and I too have felt some of the negative...

Re: Yanmar YSM8 handcranking problem

The owner didn't disconnect the alarm and the sensor tested good. Broken wire in the harness. Temp sender was bad though.

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

I carry four. Would normally only carry three but someone gave me the fourth one (a 25-Danforth) as payment for getting his engine running (Hurricane boat liveaboard in Florida, don't ask). Anchors...

Re: Yanmar YSM8 handcranking problem

Not a 1GM10. Regular old 6.5 hp 1 GM. Good compression. New piston, rings, bearings done last year. Re-lapped the valves and replaced the oil seals as well. Doesn't smoke so I didn't replace valve...

I'd previously read you YSM8 mission while researching this engine. Have passed it on. He already has a line on a running Beta 3-cylinder and gearbox from a local boatyard.

Many thanks to both...

Compass790, went back over to the boat and removed the front cover (again) and attempted to rotate the engine directly at the camshaft. Wouldn't turn. Still rotates when the ring gear is moved. And...
