I was attacked by a sperm whale

Over 30 years of sailing and I've always enjoyed the many encounters I've had with whales. Except one.

About 8 years ago, 400 miles out of the Azores single handing a classic racing trimaran, I...

Re: Sailing vs Power Catamaran - Time, Cost and Enjoyment

--As long as you not not shame others for their choices, it is OK.

What's so precious about causing shame? We live on a planet with a limited size. We can only use resources at a certain rate...

Re: Sailing vs Power Catamaran - Time, Cost and Enjoyment

No frothing. I was asking why don't people generally consider the costs more generally, rather than just to the hole in the bank account. You missed my point that I sailed in a boat that was headed...

Re: Sailing vs Power Catamaran - Time, Cost and Enjoyment

Yeah, the hype of the media - but I've seen the changes on the coral reefs in the Caribbean over the last 35 years. That's not media hype. I've seen the deforestation in Malaysia to make way for palm...

Re: Sailing vs Power Catamaran - Time, Cost and Enjoyment

No I don't drive a car.

And I sailed the Atlantic route myself, using an old boat that was heading for landfill. I wouldn't consider buying/building a new one.

But what have my 'green...

Re: Sailing vs Power Catamaran - Time, Cost and Enjoyment

I appreciate the subject is the balance of time, cost and enjoyment with sail vs power.

But the cost and enjoyment factors discussed seem entirely self-centred. As in how many dollars leave the...

Re: Advantages and disadvantages of cats for solo sailing

For single-handing a cat is great. Mine had a seat that went right across the saloon up forward. So it was very comfortable and easy to keep watch from there. All my navigation data fed into my...

Re: Is It Time to Stop Sailing?

Mould: I solved it on my cat by removing all linings and painting interior surfaces with water based paint designed for kitchens and bathrooms. The paint is cheap, easy to use and contains a...

Re: Owner Built Boats and Builders

Want so see a weird looking 30 foot boat 18 feet wide?

Here's (https://sagittacatamaran.xyz/)one.

I sailed it single-handed twice across the Atlantic, and many other trips.

I've now sold the...

Re: Problem connecting àis to laptop

Hey pizzazz,

Thanks for that. I did exactly as you suggested, and I can see the ais signals from other boats in opencpn.

However, 'own ship' is usually grey, occasionally switching to red.

Re: Problem connecting àis to laptop

I've pedalled 10 miles down the road (in the rain!) and bought a rs232 to usb cable.

One complication I forgot to mention is that the serial plug plugged into the back of the ais ends in bare...

Re: Problem connecting àis to laptop

That sounds a bit familiar b, thanks very much.

We'll have to wait for access to a computer shop. It's all sheep, foxes and ravens round here.

Thanks a lot,

John

Problem connecting àis to laptop

On my own boat I have àis connected to my laptop and it works fine. Problem is, I can't remember how I set it up. I know the only connection to the laptop is a usb.

So I'm cruising on a friend's...

Re: Use of drogue/parachute anchor on Catamaran

Thinwater,

You are right, the chain did pop out at times in the roughest weather. I think I had 100 metres of rope on a loop, and I had 10 metres of chain.

I could have added another anchor...

Re: Use of drogue/parachute anchor on Catamaran

The drogue I've used in rough weather was the same as JohnT used. I had a Galerider on board, and a JSD. However, the wind was blowing me right to my destination, so I didn't want to stop, and I...

Re: Use of drogue/parachute anchor on Catamaran

Thinwater,

I've never had to cross a breaking bar with my cat, but I'll have a drogue to hand if I do. Good idea. Another for the quiver! :)

Re: Use of drogue/parachute anchor on Catamaran

The engine solution is only practical is you have a nice pair of diesels I think. And if the weather is wild, well, there's plenty of wind for a storm jib.

Hey, I'm not claiming hoisting a storm...

Re: Use of drogue/parachute anchor on Catamaran

A storm jib is enough to keep a cat dragging a drogue from going broadside in the troughs. I've spent a couple of weeks drogue dragging. In fact, there were times when the seas were still high but...

Re: Do Cat Owners Actually Beach Their Cats ?

I beach my 9m Sagitta (daggerboard version) twice a day. It's parked on soft mud, in a pool just off the river that never gets any waves in it.

Adding some 3" deep oak mini-keels was one of the...

Re: Seeking Cats with Daggerboards and Protected Helm

I prefer no helm at all. Why would you want to be out there steering unless you were racing?

I've sailed 10,000 miles or so in the last couple of years, and probably spent less than 10 hours...
