Re: Full electronics upgrade - B&G, Raymarine or Garmin?

I like the concept of Orca (https://getorca.com). Pick the nmea devices of your choice to serve up wind / depth / AIS etc. Select a radar system that Orca supports. Use their hardware/software to run...

Re: Hunter Sailboat

My first monohull was a Hunter 37.5 which we owned for 3 years. Really loved the layout of this boat. Full size head with separate shower, full aft cabin - it checked all our boxes. Perfect for 4...

Re: US couple buying catamaran in Turkey and traveling around with our dog

Might be easier to immigrate to an EU country LOL. Nomad Capitalist on Youtube had some good videos on best countries to do this.

We have been thinking about cruising the med for a couple of years...

Re: Mast compression post calculations.

I am a structural engineer: pretty safe to assume a design compression force equal to the tensile capacity of your windward side stay. As as matter of reference a HSS152x6.4mm wall (6"x1/4") tube (45...

Re: US Cruising Permit for Canadian (and state tax question)

When we left for Bahamas we called and asked if we had to surrender our permit and where told no (false info). Came back to bite us 8 months later when our permit expired in Annapolis. Yay, let's go...

Re: US Cruising Permit for Canadian (and state tax question)

My question still remains: if I purchase a boat in the states, do I have to take it out of country and re-enter to obtain a cruising permit? This was the rule we followed with our last purchase, has...

Re: US Cruising Permit for Canadian (and state tax question)

Thanks. To rephrase my question, if I purchase a vessel in say, the Chesapeake Bay, is there any work around to not have to take the vessel out of country and re-enter in order to get a US Cruising...

Re: North Up or Heading Up?

I personally see no advantage to north up. Why subject you brain to one additional calculation: The reef is on the port side of the display. To steer away from it turn to port. It's not logical and...

We are getting ready to go cruising again and I'm curious how many of you full time cruisers have maintained a stake on land or have you just cashed out and will worry about it when you return? Our...

Re: First Cat for Family New to Cruising

Do it. The actual process of sailing is not difficult and skills can be fine tuned as you go. You do need to know how to handle things in big air and preempt problems wirh a conservative sail plan....

Re: Who Pays????

Split it 50/50. You were to frugal to hire a professional, your buddy should feel bad for taking your boat somewhere it didn't belong.

Not sure what unmarked channel means? I assume you had charts...

Re: Free (and Legal) BSB Charts from Maptech!

Jeppesen has just released Plan2Nav for Android with Active Captain support. Not free (app is but maps aren't) but seems to be very reasonably priced.

Just trying it out now to see how it works.

Re: Buying a US Boat and Importing to Canada

You need to talk to both an accountant and a lawyer. I am pretty sure a non-US resident cannot document a boat - for that you need to be a US citizen to do that. I believe you can get state...
