Re: Smoking Volvo Penta MD 11C

Now, I have done the checks including the valves and solved the problem of following the correct procedure, it was the rocking bit I wasn't quite sure about. I also checked the exhaust hose and...

Re: Smoking Volvo Penta MD 11C

A few things to check out for starters:
Re-do the valves as per manual, the air filters (have been cleaned out recently, but you never know), the cold start button (seems to work fine though). ...

Re: Smoking Volvo Penta MD 11C

Thanks all for your responses!
Just a couple of replies to your postings.

The liners, shims etc. are (to the best of my abilities) reassembled correctly.

The fuel looks clean in the glass bowl...

Re: Smoking Volvo Penta MD 11C

Managed to check the motor running this morning despite the challenges of a bleak Danish winter!

I let it run at 1800 revs (max is 2500) for a little while and then decompressed each cylinder at a...

Re: Smoking Volvo Penta MD 11C

Thanks guys!
The only indicater I have for steam is the lack of a pungent smell of diesel. It would be a lot simpler if it was white smoke. I'll check again when the weather clears (if ever!).
I'll...

Re: Smoking Volvo Penta MD 11C

Reply to Viking Sailor: Could you be more specific? What part part of the exhaust system do you mean? Manifold and elbow are fine and water (and smoke/steam) is passing through the rest just fine. I...

Hi all.
I'm going through serious problems with my Volvo Penta MD 11C (1985) and need some advice.

First the motor was over-heating big time. The cylinders were reaching some 85 degrees...

How to test a temperature gauge and sensor.

I have a 1985 Volvo Penta MD 11C - inconveniently, the temperature gauge or the sensor is not working. Would anybody know how to test the metre and the sensor separately? Just replacing one or the...

Re: How can I tell (or can I?) if a through hull needs to be replaced

I don't think it's as bad as spontaneous failure but it can shatter as a result of blows, twists and the likes. If it shows pink you really must replace it.
It seems there is a general consensus on...

Re: How can I tell (or can I?) if a through hull needs to be replaced

The photo I posted was showing a shattered bronze through hull! Bronze can absolutely get brittle.

Re: How can I tell (or can I?) if a through hull needs to be replaced

An easy way to tell if a brass or bronze through hull is dead is to scratch the surface of the fitting. If the scratch shows yellowish the metal is probably ok, however, if it is pinkish in colour,...

Re: Fiberglass thru hull fittings

Bronze do NOT last indefinetely. Just replaced one that showed reddish when scratched. When I knocked it a bit, trying to get it off, it broke off clean just behind the flange.
I'm slowly replacing...

Re: Thru hull backing blocks

Bamboo is not suitable at all in boatbuilding - it rots and splits easily. As already mentioned, you also have to be very carefull with teak and epoxy. Because of the oil content it doesn't glue all...
