Re: Oven cleaner to clean mast? Why not?

It seems OP is looking for affirmation, not advice. Doesn’t have the budget to fix it right, so he’d rather make a mess of it. I wonder how much he’ll get for that boat when the mast is a POS. ...

Re: Best cruising East Coast of North America

Having cruised the entire East Coast US and much of the Bahamas- I agree with your statements.

Re: Mystic to Annapolis time frame

Good decision. Also, the NJ coast can be a tough trip. Not many places to bail out, especially in bad weather.

Re: Boats with extensive owner performed refits?

Looks like an owner-loved boat. That is a GOOD thing in a used boat. Boats that lack owner enhancements usually lack maintenance as well.
Can’t comment on insurance but I’d expect the insurer to...

Re: Do you cook using salt water while cruising?

Those who consume a lot of salt are physically impaired in a number of ways. Do the research. (I’m not going to try to convince anyone.)

Mineral stains on floor whether you pee standing or sitting...

I try to encourage everyone on my boat to pee sitting. Regardless, the head floor seems to develop mineral deposits in front of the toilet between the cross-hatched non-skid pattern. These are...

Re: What's your anchoring etiquette

What type of rangefinder do you use? I’m a confessed gadget guy and sometimes stress about this issue when I probably don’t need to.

Re: What do Leopard owners think of the forward cockpit

I have a 2017 L40, and the forward door is a wonderful feature. It does not affect performance (I always close it when underway) and just today I sailed at about 7.5-8.5 knots on a beam reach...

Re: Black water tank pump-out

This is horrible advice - it is VERY likely that the OP will get a literal sh#t-shower if he tries that method. Been there, got the medal :frown:
When pumping out you MUST have a tight seal of the...

Re: Chesapeake to Maine - Summer 2024

The horizontal clearance on that bridge is only 30’ and the current can flow swiftly. You need to have big balls (fenders of course) to go through if you have a cat or tri with wide beam. I wrote in...

Re: Rocna Mk II

Pricey. The Rocna Vulcan is a much better value, as are the Mantus Ml and M2. IDK what the relative performance of the Rocna MII is but those others are top-tier.
As for size, I’d get the biggest...

Re: Chesapeake to Maine - Summer 2024

What I mean by free is any anchorage, vs. a harbor that’s completely full of moorings leaving only the most exposed areas for anchoring. You mentioned Martha’s Vineyard - so let’s use that as an...

Re: Chesapeake to Maine - Summer 2024

True but the big issue is shore access. Free anchorages that are protected in the lee of a shore (for shelter from bad weather) are getting scarce if you also want to find a dinghy dock to just go...

Re: Chesapeake to Maine - Summer 2024

I recommend installing line cutters on your propshafts, if you don’t already have them. In my catamaran I often motored on one engine when in thick trap areas also, to reduce our chances of snagging.

Re: Chesapeake to Maine - Summer 2024

@sailingharry has it right, and all of the prior posts have good advice. Due to the prevailing winds I suggest you leave 3 times as much time to get back. You’ll likely be sailing as you travel...

Re: Another one: aground at ponce inlet and rescued

As usual the story is incomplete and we are not justified to judge the skipper. The story said one person was taken off the boat. We have no idea what extenuating circumstance led him to be there at...

Re: LEAVING BOAT

It’s always a good idea to have a trustworthy person check the boat daily, if possible, or at least to check the lines before/after storms. I like to arrange for a dockhand or manager to watch it,...

Re: Garmin inReach mini as safety device at sea for a couple

Very good response, but the last line is a bit worrisome. DON’T ASSUME YOU CAN BE LOCATED IF YOU GO OVERBOARD. Sorry for shouting, but it can’t be emphasized enough. Use dual tethers, so you can...

Crew returning to US by air from the Bahamas

I've read that the airlines can refuse you if you want to fly one-way to the Bahamas without a return air ticket.

Re: Navionics autorouteissues.

Sometime around August 2022 they issued a software update that changed the autoroute algorithm, and it was a functional downgrade IMHO. I opened a case with them in September of that year and they...

Re: Metal Mooring Attachment-no pick up

We MUST be wary of any mooring with a bar running through the buoy to the attachments on top. These internal bars tend to rust in the hidden areas and this is the most common failure mode. I’ve...
