Re: How Far Have You Sailed?

All of this has been fun to read. I have owned only one sea boat and always kept a log and just for the fun of it. Old sailor (retired) and single-handed. Never expected to go very far but sailed...

Re: California to Costa Rica

My first boat was a WWP15. I mostly sailed it in the ocean outside my home port of Morro Bay. I picked my days carefully and never got into serious trouble. Maybe 18 knots of wind and 4 foot waves...

Re: What is "Hull Speed" Anyway

I have experienced some interesting examples of hull speed. My 21.2 foot waterline length gives 6.20 knots using the factor of 1.34. Since my boat is heavy with long keel this factor may be...

Re: best time sail san francisco los angeles

Winter travel on the Sur Coast can be quite beautiful. When high pressure builds in between storms the air is very clear (no fog), it is warm and the wind is light (so light you probably will...

Re: GPS drifting ? At anchor

My first GPS receiver lasted 10 years and then lost its ability to get good signals from satellites. One result was that it did exactly what you are describing. It would look like I was dragging at...

Re: Anchoring without inboard or windlass

I have anchored at Santa Cruz a number of times and usually without the engine running. I anchor on the west side of the pier and there is lots of room, water is 25 feet deep with a good sand...

Re: Dana 24 or Com-Pac 23 Pilothouse

I've been sailing a Dana for 15 years and I also started sailing at an advanced age. I mostly single-hand (with autopilot) and the boat is very stable, safe and a perfect "old man's" boat (or a...

Re: Best year-round sailing in the USA?

I've been sailing in Morro Bay California for 15 years. Some of our best sailing months are in the winter when the fog is gone and the sun shines. Our Yacht Club has an active ocean fleet for both...

Re: Rope Rode - What Type (do you have)? What would you prefer?

You sure ask a lot of questions! I don't have that many answers.

My boat is 24 feet and 8000 lbs with not too much windage. It is 15 years old and I anchor at least 40 times per year. Anchoring...

Re: How Close Is Too Close?

You also have to know "local customs." In the Santa Barbara Channel Island anchorages many are small coves and the custom is that everyone uses two anchors and there isn't much space between boats. ...

Re: Coastal cruising and getting older

This has been a great thread! A chance to hear from all the other "oldsters".

I have a few more comments. Sailing in a mono-hull will never be easy when its blowing and rough and I know that. ...

Re: Coastal cruising and getting older

I have a Pacific Seacraft 24 ft Dana. This boat is much like your Serrafyn except made of fiberglass and has an 18 horse diesel. It is simply equipped for cheap maintenance and set up for...

Re: Overboard holding tank discharge

My boat uses a hand-powered diaphram pump to empty the holding tank. It empties thru a thru-hull below the waterline. This has worked very well for 15 years.

OpenCPN good luck!

I had just downloaded OpenCPN. A visitor arrived at our Yacht Club so I took a break to sign him in. I asked if he used OpenCPN. Yes- he used it because he was one of the developers! Talk about...

Re: New guy, first sailboat, first trip will be from Dana point to King harbor

When I bought my boat my first ocean passage was from Dana Point to King Harbor. Left at 5 AM, arrived at 3 PM. No wind until 11 AM, a little rough going toward Pt. Fermin but lighter wind once...

Re: Sea State vs Boat Size (what are you comfortable with)

I will answer like Stu did-
24 foot boat (mine), 10 ft @ 8 sec, sailing upwind, 16 kts wind, night, fog, boat speed 4 kts. This was a learning experience so I keep going for 4 hours before turning...

Re: San Francisco bar conditions and currents

I like donradcliffs response and pretty much agree. I am a big chicken so I won't go out when a strong ebb is running. Also difficult if a strong flood is running. So I go out on slack but once...

Re: Bechers Bay anchorages

Thanks to Mal and Al for your suggestions. In a new revision of Fagan's cruise guide he mentions anchoring south of Skunk Point so that answers one of my questions. He feels that Becher's SE...

Re: new Jabbsco Impellor trashed after 48 hrs solid running

Just to let you know, these pumps should self-prime but don't always work as they should. Mine (a Johnson pump) is very subject to air locking. When I change an impeller I must fill the input side...

Re: Why is everything on a boat so expensive?

Derfy- You are correct in your thinking. I just knew I didn't have a lot of years to learn everything. Now I know there are boat yards that can restore an old boat to almost new condition for a lot...

Re: Why is everything on a boat so expensive?

Why are sailboats so expensive to own? I started sailing at age 55 and didn't want to buy an old boat that needed extensive renovation before it could be sailed on the North Pacific Ocean and be...
