Re: Docking long keel/heavy displacement yachts.

A successful maneuver my wife and I have used in the situation where there are high cross-winds or high following winds in the marina is to anchor or tie to a more favorable dock and wait it out.

Re: TEAK SEALER Alternative

Cetol seems to last longer than most! Plus you can touch it up without taking the whole lot down to bare wood. I can normally get 10 years before stripping to bare wood up here in the north country.

Re: Atricles. What types of articles do you like to see in magazines?

I would enjoy some yachting fiction stories mixed in with the hardcore nuts and bolts articles. For example, a short story and a serialized book thread each month.

Re: Why would they alter the shape of the propane tank??

Take a look at the composite tanks. If one will fit you will also save some weight.

Re: Best places around the world to buy a used sailboat?

Check out boats for sale in the Great Lakes. In the FRESH water for 6 out of 12 months per year. Exposed to lower sun angles in general. So much less aged by usage and the environment than most...

Re: Ammonia smell in cabin

If the root cause is cat piss I wouldn't take the boat if it was free. It will rock your olfactory every single time you go from the fresh air above to the foul air below.

Re: Ammonia smell in cabin

It is impossible to passivate cat urine that has soaked into wood. Bleach, dime store cat urine treatments, etc. will not work over time as the urine will continue to outgas.

The only solution...

Re: Growing ChatGPT use on the site.

I guess I don't care who answers the questions as long as the answers are clear, concise, and correct. I am betting that ChatGPT would be more efficient and less sarcastic overall.

So if the post...

Re: Deck shoes. What's good, and affordable?

So is the shoe weighted on the ramp? Am probably some what dense here but seriously interested in how you are doing the testing.

Maybe explain with a little more detail so an engineer could...

Re: Deck shoes. What's good, and affordable?

So how are you doing the testing?? Are you actually getting a coefficient of friction?

Re: Deck shoes. What's good, and affordable?

Wondering, have you tried your testing when the ramp is wet? And, how did you evaluate the grip or friction on the ramp?

It seems that a smooth grippy sole dry could trap a film of water and...

Re: The Death of the Cruising Guide Book

For our trip through Europe we bought new and used cruising guides along the way. It's a "first approximation" to get the lay of the land and figuring out destinations and backup plans. They don't...

Re: Extensive dry rot in hull. Fully remove ply?

I would check the fastner integrity before going all out on the repair. When a plywood section comes off in a sea it is a quick trip to the bottom. I have seen projects where galvanised and steel...

Re: Lake Superior over winter storage

Haul out in Marquette is via a crane hired at the end of season by all. Hence you can't randomly haul unless you hire the crane yourself.

Re: Lake Superior over winter storage

You can sail from the North Shore (of Lake Superior) to MI/WI/MN in 16 hours or less plus or minus. Essentially, you could winter up in any number of marinas on the US side then.
