    The original nautech used a control head and compass unit that was in a sort of cylinder, with the course to steer dialed in at one end. Normally this works ok, but the drive unit can be one of several types and have been known to fail. Unfortunately some of these use three wires, and others four wires, and are not compatible. I tried to get one replaced by Raymarine about 7 years ago and even then, they were unable due to lack of spares. These units are old!

    At that time I was able to get an ST3000 which was a much better unit. Now you cannot even get that one new.

    Not very helpful, but I doubt you will find a cheap autopilot these days.
