GPS trackers can be a good thing. As an motion alarm, it would give false positives. Best bet is to use it with the geo-fence concept (if it moves outside of a set box, it will text you or otherwise alert you.
There are many alternatives - if you are staying coastal (within GSM/cellular coverage) - there are several alternatives. If going offshore -satellite coverage is really your best bet - and also a bit more expensive.
