We used the corn stuff for awhile, but found it had an odd odor that we did not care for. We switched to sWheatScoop, made from wheat, and it works MUCH better for us. I would try both, and pick whatever one works for you.

It is also cheaper than the corn stuff.

Ok, Call me crazy, but back when we had a litter box we used the silica beads. I had enough to fill the box twice. every two weeks I poured the used beads into a bucket and filled it with hot water and let it soak over night and filled the box with the other batch.

The next morning I poured the water off and filled it once more. The day after I poured the water off and left them to dry for the next week and a half.

rinse and repeat when the time came to change again. I used those two sets of beads for am year I bet... they got yellow when the cat used them and they got clearish when they were clean. I think when they didn't dry fast enough I put them on a tray and stuck them in the oven or if the weather was good, out in the sun.

Might not be a project you would want to take on while on a passage, but while moored or docked it would be easy enough.

I used a pretty deep box and a deep cotton rug under it to keep the beads from tracking...

Cheaper is good. What about tracking?

Yesterday, we tried to find the corn stuff, but came up empty handed.
So we bought something else. It's also based on something organic, and the size of the stuff is really big. It works like a charm, no more tracking.

snowy looks like maine coon mix--they love boats and take over the household--best kats i have ever know.---gorgeous kat---huge and beautiful. smart too!!! they just dont steer well--they do guard puuurfectly well and they are awesome entertainment--but they donot steer worth a darn......mine plays in the rain and catches and fetches and walks on leash-- is awesome cool....beautiful kat is your snowy----

I've owned cats most of my life, but I wonder how you know your cat "likes/loves" type X litter?

Seems I have always gotten the litter based on what worked out best as far as odor and cleaning for ME! All the cats I've had over the years don't seem to have cared either way.

Snowy is looks like a maine coon mix, but she actually is a norwegian forest cat.
So she'll stil grow to be a big cat. but currently she's just under 3 kg, and playful.

The litter we got is called: "cat country ultra"

still working on that one----he prefers to fish by sleeping while i do the work..lol typical of cats..mine does the sit and purr--is nice to have ....but he really doesnt steer well..LOL

I am deff taking the advise to switch to crystals from clay, and also stocking up on litter. We have tons of storage for a 30footer

i use th eclumping litter with no problem i will not use the crystals aas they are detrimental to male cat health--promote FUS, as i was advised. .the litter is buyable anywhere ye go anymore--there is no problem with keeping kitty on his./her routine.
because i have a huge heavy displacement boat i can keep my litter tubs for use later --makes good balast in bilges. on the performance cruiser i sailed for a near year in gulf, i kept it under vee berth. litter box was in q-berth.

bubby seems to use the clay stuff best--doesnt kick it out of the box nor shun it. if cat acts funny towards his litter, add some of the old stuff to the new kind and he will conform in time. wean to the new...

I switched from all the clay versions to "crystals" (silica gel) for one primary reason. The other versions had "grain size" that was too small and the kitty litter migrated into the bilges and every where else where I did not want it to go. The "Crystals" are large and have a lot less of a ability to get down under the floor boards. Also the other versions tend to remain on the cabin sole and grind away the floor finish. The Crystals are large enough that you cannot ignore them. When you step on one you have to remove it from your foot and therefore you keep the area sweep up more.

i find a throw rug under the pan keeps tracking to a minimum. i use the latex backed ones for bathroom use-- they work great and kat loves HIS rug.....
