But before I drop 80+ bucks on one of these, I want to know they are amazing.

I’ve had the corryvreckan. Not too shabby!!

Haha. The list was intended to be skewed, and not a serious poll. It would've been funnier if I had made it something like

Bourbon
Islay Single Malt
Other stuff

Perhaps a better poll, given the responses, and given that you can only do four, would've been

Whiskey
Whisky (you guys gave us the "e" in return for our used barrels you use to make yours)
Cognac
Rum

  • Lagavulin
  • Talisker
  • Bowmore
  • or if I really want to taste the soil, Laphroaig
Of course, you always gotta support the local, and so I have enjoyed Glen Breton over the years. I recall when it first launched its single malt, the first in North America (so they claim). Certainly the first in Canada.
A man of taste.. my preference is the other way around though.. more an earthy type :-). Arbeg would make my list for the same reasons (but understand i'm extreme :-))

I like Arbeg, although it is a bit too acrid to make my top list. But I'd never turn down a dram .

Sailors and their smoky, peaty whisky. I think there's a doctoral dissertation in this that someone could write about this strange phenomenon!

Re: What's your drop of choice?

My first choice is Jameson 18 year old Irish whiskey, although Tullamore Dew 12 year old Irish will do nicely if I'm out of Jameson.

For Bourbon, Maker's Mark is my go to, although I am working through a bottle of Evan Williams 100 proof red label that is quite entertaining.

Wow, I thought that this was a sailing/ cruising forum? No.
Are you a CRUISER or a BOOZER?

Don’t think that this is the place for this discussion.

Re: What's your drop of choice?

On my boat, I have Basil Hayden, booker's, Jim beam apple (dessert bourbon), and Angel's envy, and Widow Jane. The Angel's is finished in port wine casks and picks up a slight cherry finish. The Widow is super smooth. I do have a 25 year Glenfiddich, but scotch is not my favorite. I keep the variety for company aboard.

There is something special for me about a bourbon at sunset in the anchorage. It's an homage to my step dad who meant so much. We used to sip a bourbon together, sit on a bench at the beach where we lived in Florida, and watch the sunset over the gulf of Mexico, and toast the sun as she set.

i'm not a big drinker. am true lightweight. actually one glass of anything, and i feel it! but this discussion has definitely provided me with a bit of salty fun

i think it has its place here because sharing whiskey/whisky and other drop stories is what cruisers tend to do in the cockpit.

and as anyone can surely imagine, these folks chatting about bourbon and such) would be having these moments in their cockpits... if not for covid.

some are stranded far away from their boats, take Mike O or Carsten B. so many. and those who are on their boats are doing their best to not spread covid (or catch it).

i really miss socialising too. i've been wearing double masks for a whole year, haven't seen but a few smiles in the real in all that time, and am so thirsty for a life before, that i'm even contemplating watching Outlander for a third time.

over here, the new variant is going rampant; we haven't vaccines; and we going into lockdown again in lots of regions of france, again.

so, as far as socialising goes, CF is about the only place for many right now, and talking about one's favourite drink in public is not the same thing as getting sloshed in public.

I think we've just been nattered at:

Merry, this is the perfect place for this discussion. The wonderful thing about forums are that you don't have to read, let alone participate in, threads that you have no interest in.

Re: What's your drop of choice?

Bourbon? Whatever a friend offers me.
Rye? Label doesn't matter, for it all comes from the same distillery.

Rum? Flor de Caña, the older the better.

Scotch? Macallan 12, or any older Macallan that I can afford.

I have some 25-y-o Macallan that I bought in Edinburgh in 2014 @ Cadenhead's for about $200, today's price being 10X more.

Re: What's your drop of choice?

Given my genetic heritage, I'm also partial to Irish whiskeys. Tullamore Dew, Connemara, Bushmills (Black Bush) and of course Jameson.

One of the first 'sailboats' I ever sailed was "The Good Ship Jameson." This was on a long canoe trip to James Bay. We made a catamaran out of the two canoes and christened our new vessel with the remains of the bottle.

Good times...

Re: What's your drop of choice?

Seeing as how I’m a sophisticated Southern Gentleman, Bourbon is my preferred drink, specifically Kentucky Bourbon.
I must also admit, being a sailor and Jarhead, I make a very clean Rum. The aging process is the key....after the 4th distillation and carbon filtration it’s aged in clean Jim Beam bottles for about a week...unless there’s no more in the cupboard, then it’s aged about 10 minutes ;-)

How interesting to run into other fans here.
