If you are in Sydney you can walk to Herbie's from Rozelle Bay. Walk west up the hill along Victoria Road and turn left at the top. Herbie's is about 3 blocks down in an old house on the right. They have a selection of dried and powdered chillies plus all kinds of pre mixed Middle Eastern spices like dukkah, zaatar, ras el hanout or chermoula.

as rubber bands are made of latex, and very cheap, they do not work well in pair a dice of the tropics......however, many folks here in mainland mexico drink liquids from bags that are gathered and banded at top with a straw in them...funny -- seems there are rubber bands in tropical mexico.....

Speaking of rubber bands (not for roling), There are some cool Silicone rubber bands at gourmet kitchen supply shops that are the greatest, they last until you loose them.

Re: What Can you not find in Certain Countries While Cruising?

All this talk about Vegemite got my salivary glands flowing...so I just had to go and have a iece of toast with Vegemite - pic attached - so the rest of the world can see how thin it needs to be spread.

Reckon I'd have gagged if I took the "Vegemite Challenge" and tried to swallow a tablespoonfull.....yuk. Maybe half a teaspoonful on a slice of toast..if that..!

Another can't get is Promite.....another 'mite' similar to Marmite and Vegemite, but made from vegetable extract, and is really more like the video description of "condensed milk mixed with soy sauce" as it is literally runny, not firm like Vegemite.

But my all time fave honey - Tasmanian Leatherwood - is, AFAIK only available in Oz, as it's made by extremely territorial Tasmanian bees.

My wife is making a quick trip back to Australia Dec 6th. She's not even Australian but tells me she is going to spend her time eating meat pies and lamingtons at the beach and promises to bring back Vegemite.

Can't get a good meat pie outside Australia. The great Australian meat pie concept seemed to have emerged from horrible British/Irish table fare. The later immigrants were having none of that nonsense. The Lebanonese and Greeks added filo and Vietnamese bakers across Australia perfected the baking methods. Now comes in flavors influenced by people from around the world. Mmmmm....

Re: What Can you not find in Certain Countries While Cruising?

Ask for a few large jars which cost about $8 each. Vegemite will last 2 years, even in the tropics.

I resemble that remark. , the finest pies were being made above 54 north long before we shipped you lot off In chains. As for pies with filo pastry , yuk. Proper ones are made with hot water pastry and a method that goes back 1000 years ill have you know

It would last virtually forever in my locker.

Unopened.

Untasted.

Unloved.

Do not try to bring Vegemite into the USA. They have tightened up considerably on importation of poisonous/dangerous substances since 9/11.
