Re: How do you make toast?

I don't get what's with all the gizmos and gadgets. Just put the bread in a no-stick frying pan. Flip it when one side is sufficiently dark. I toast bread, English muffins, whatever, this is the way. No gadgets required.

Re: How do you make toast?

This is important to me also. When we used the boat as a weekend and vacation platform we used an electric toaster that had low wattage so our inverter could manage. Now full time cruising we use a cast Iron skillet with no sides. Of course the skillet works for eggs, French Toast, sandwichs and my favorite making pita. Kinda like anchor selection which of the devices mentioned works for you ,lots of choices

The one I have is a stainless screen formed into an A frame with a ledge at the base. Similar to the Coughlan's but faster (pay attention or it'll burn---but it's fast)

Second the suggestions by Spot, Shrew and others. Works great, stores in almost no space, and cheap enough to replace if it does rust.

I use my cast iron frying pan with just a little butter.

Toasts shall go into the oven. Or you use the 1,5 kW Inverter and an toaster.

Re: How do you make toast?

Thinking about it, from a pure efficiency perspective, an electric toaster likely wins. Using a full size oven is likely to be least efficient, with the various stovetop options being somewhere in between (but closer to the oven than the toaster). So if you can power an electric toaster (and have space for one) and care about conserving propane (assuming a propane stove), the toaster is likely the best choice.

I tried holding bread over the burner on the stove, that just set off the smoke detector. We tried doing it in a pan, less than successful.

Do I need to run a toaster off an inverter?

My bagels need to know!
Fry pan. Medium + heat. Do NOT walk away, or even get distracted.
With practice it works well enough; if we stay by the stove we don't burn the toast. Toast it fast rather than slow, only because if you check it a few times and it's not browning, you'll lose interest and next time you look it'll be toast. Literally.

Re: How do you make toast?

Came with the boat and works great on very low flame (propane)! Also have an electric toaster that gets used when we have shore power.

An electric toaster on our boat is a non-starter, and really not needed.
We have always used the stainless steel version of the same unit Mike uses.

I especially like it because it is among the few that will also work to warm/ toast thin flat breads. (e.g., tortillas, naan, etc.)

We could readily support an electric toaster, but so far we haven’t found a second use case to justify the space it would require (short of routine testing of the smoke alarms...)

Cheers! Bill

Re: How do you make toast?

Any and all of the diffusers will work. If you are old enough you will note that the diffusers were the way we all made toast when we were young, For an added benefit if you put pot upside down on the flat diffuser you can also bake potatoes the way we did it years ago

Propane is cheaper than off-the-grid electric power by a factor of at least 10. We just toast it in a pan on the propane stove.

Depends on your power source. If you'd have to fire up a generator to run the toaster, I agree. But if you've got solar or wind power and there are a few extra amps in the power budget, use of the toaster is basically free.
