Re: How do you make toast?

When we had to replace our microwave I bought one that had a built in toaster oven. Works perfectly for us and takes up no additional space.

Re: How do you make toast?

12" black iron frying pan, I use a little butter, my wife toasts it in the pan dry.

No extra equipment to store, no power usage to account for, no single use appliances in our galley.

We use the broiler in the oven....granted it’s blazing hot if there’s no wind.

Re: How do you make toast?

At first, I bought one, as it looks good, but it is just a useless toaster.

I don't agree about the efficiency of stovetop toasting. My pan gets hot in 2 minutes and toast is done in 3-5 more minutes - also, a common thing for us is to make eggs and toast, so you are going to heat up the frying pan anyway! I heat it up, make the toast, then cook the eggs. Very efficient.

An oven takes 20-40 minutes to heat up. How is that even comparable? Assuming you are correct that the electric toaster is most efficient (speaking in terms of generic energy - BTUs - I have to agree) - but the stovetop method is much closer to the electric toaster than the oven method.

And you cant just look at efficiency, a toaster device of any kind (electric or otherwise) takes up valuable space which has to be accounted for in the calculation. Unless you are Elwood Blues and subsist completely on toast, for most people who make toast less frequently, dedicating space to a single-use tool (ie. electric toaster) is not the best solution, in my view.

Re: How do you make toast?

The Great thing about toasting in a frying pan, I use olive oil as I can cook mushrooms as a topping at the same time I'm toasting rye bread rolls cut in half spread flat like a butterfly.

My first thought was, you warm up the outside of the bread until it gets crusty

That's sort of a flip answer. (Oops, I shouldn't use such words around a catamaran owner)

it is true that most cat owners know how to make toast - even when upside down.

i guess needing instructions is a mono thing...

cheers,

Best tasting toast in the world is done in a cast iron fry pan.

On second thought, you are right. I should talk - we use our microwave oven many times each day to heat up coffee. I guess once-a-day use of a real toaster would not make that much difference.
