Re: Minimum Channel Depth Standard?

All great information! I'll add the "Honor Series" to my reading list, too. Cuz I need an excuse to read *more* Civil War stuff.

It's good to have some local knowledge. The charts are one thing, but hearing from people who actually have firsthand experience is much better. When I was doing my research before buying a boat of my own, center-boards weren't even on the list. It now looks like that may be an essential quality I'll be lucky to have.

I'm curious what "hardy" means there? And how bad are the bugs near the keys?

It sounds like finding a slip somewhere near Tampa or in Charlotte Harbor will be essential. I expect to leave the boat for a couple more seasons in the PNW - the border closure has rewritten a lot of itineraries - but being able to sail in warm water looks fantastic.

I doubt it refers to bugs. There aren’t many bugs out in the open in wind. You probably won’t be bothered at anchor if not too close to shore in an open area, such as DeSoto Pt. More likely, the extremes of weather between seasons. NW cold fronts can bring quite cold, high winds and rain. In summer hot, muggy, windless conditions prevail where the best wind of a day may come from a nearby, but not too near hopefully, pop-up thunderstorm. Nice to get the wind but not the rain, etc. Also, don’t want to see lightening flashing nearby, etc.

Re: Minimum Channel Depth Standard?

I've seen channel markers on dry ground at low tide.

So caution is advised.

Re: Minimum Channel Depth Standard?

Thanks again for all the information. Sorry for the slow reply, but apparently my original response never posted.

I'll check out "Honor" series. Can never read too much on the Civil War.
