Re: I'm about to motor out and learn to sail.

Go out with an experienced sailor, someone with as much experience as you can find. People arfew out there. Put up a notice, with a cure of youself and your boat at the marine stores, the yacht club, the marina. Someone will call. All of us who do sail would rather have you out there knowing a few things, then not.

Re: I'm about to motor out and learn to sail.

Sounds like the plan we left with (except we hadn’t read the books or tried the online simulators) and it’s been working great for us so far!

Our mantra was simple... “learn one new thing a day”.

Be safe, have fun!!

Re: I'm about to motor out and learn to sail.

To each his own - as long as you stay out of others way, I don't see a problem with trial by fire. I did the same my first outing. I did go out with an experienced sailor after my first few sails, and I will say that I felt safer with him, but it was a fun adventure trying it out myself.

Good luck and definitely pick a light wind day to test the waters (I decided 15mph winds was a good day to learn, I was wrong)!
