Heavily Fouled Rope Rode - Tips and Tricks?

So, I’ve always been a chain guy.

This is actually my first time using a rope rode where it remains submerged for a long period of time.

Any tips and tricks for this mess?

I’m thinking coil it in a bucket, pour gasoline on and light on fire? Lol

As a starting point, attach 2 soft bristled brushes face to face, pull the length of the rode between them so it gets scrubbed all around. Preferably with the brushes hanging in the water. That will likely knock 90% of the junk off.

An expensive consumable. I’m going to have to clean it for sure.

Could start with the brush.

Maybe leaving it out on deck for a couple weeks would work as well. Get it nice and crispy and then try to take it off

Front loading washing machine. If you have a nylon mesh bag, put it in that then throw in the whole thing, it will result in the rode being less tangled when you're done. I use the delicate cycle (to minimize tangling) with hot water and the highest-speed spin. Usually regular (front-loading HE-rated) laundry detergent will take that kind of stuff right off.

But good advice, Jammer despite my scene at the laundromat above.

I take my mooring gear to a self serve car wash when it is pulled every fall. Those nozzles put out a powerful stream. A portable power washer might work, too.

Lobster fishermen dip theirs in a pot of very hot water laced with bleach.

Don't stay in one place for too long! That's the solution. Another "solution" is bleach, dish soap, and water, soak, then scrub.

On the washing machine suggestion, go for it, but please use your own personal washing machine. Otherwise, you are screwing the next user of the machine.

That's another reason we like having our own, onboard washer/dryer . . . .

Wait…. So you put things like that in your own onboard washer and dryer? And you don’t see a problem after that? Why would the other machines have a problem? Just trying to follow the reasoning. Not criticizing.

The big soak idea sounds like the easiest. Kill it all with bleach and soap and stuff and then give it a scrub. Probably even easier than trying to wrangle it over to a washing machine at a laundromat or something

I can't tell, but if you mean it's twisted.... Find a better anchoring spot that doesn't spin your boat around. Had that happen in one night a couple times due to current and tide change. A swivel does nothing to help.

Get a Walmart tote tub.Soak rope in bleach water to kill the growth & then tow it behind your boat for a few miles. No mess on shore, etc. Then dry it spread out in sun.

Re: Heavily Fouled Rope Rode - Tips and Tricks?

This year my pickup line was left in the water for over a month and it was in far worse shape than your's appears in the photo. I simply took a pressure washer to the line and it did an amazing job of cleaning the lines. In fact they look new! Pressure washers can be rented for relatively little money. I have not tried a car wash. Chemical treatment is not a good idea.

Wrong interpretation of the word fouled. Lol

I’m talking about that growth. It’s disgusting. Do you see it in the picture?

I have never seen growth like that on anchoring tackle before because I have always used chain
