You need to think about the costs involved in fuel as well as the beating the boat will take when you're comparing the cost of trucking.

I've sailed from Seattle to Mexico twice, and trucked boats from Mexico to Seattle twice as well. If faced with that decision, I'd do it again.

Thank you both for the input.
I did contact a local boat transport company directly instead of going thru a broker as I had done previously, and they said 13 ft was no problem. So now I have 2 options, truck or sail!
Now I just have to decide what works for me.

Good luck on your decision. I'll bet you could get a good crew list if you decided to sail to Hawaii!!

I don't think $5000 is unreasonable for the trucking fee. You'd probably spend a good portion of that much on broken gear/food/diesel etc. while slogging up the coast (mostly motoring) as senormechanico has said.

If you can cruise at 4 knots at a 1/2 gallon per hour, you're only going to burn about 120 gallons of diesel. Even at todays inflated prices, that would be less than $500 for fuel. Wear and tear, other than the driveline should be minimal unless you insist on sailing/beating into the the prevailing winds and seas against the current offshore.

The biggest problem with 'sailing' the boat up is the time factor. Even going straight up the coast 24/7, you are looking at around 10 days. Take off enforced hide-ins for weather or just a break from the bash, it could easily stretch into a two-three week trip. If you are paying crew or hiring a delivery skipper, it gets expensive.

Would/Will I sail my boat up, damn straight. It's not a delivery to be made on a tight time schedule, however.

I left Santa Barbara in a 30 footer, and motored the whole way in 52 hours to S.F. I did it in October when everything is usually light. I am wondering if in Oct., fall, you would get the same weather that far north? The water was this flat the whole way...............
