Surrounded By Water and No Experience - St. Pete

I've lurked here for a while, but I guess I should say hello. Don't have a whole lot of boating experience other than powerboats on lakes and a few sailing trips.

I've lived in St. Petersburg for a few years, and have become more and more interested in sailing/cruising as I go. Seems like a waste of good resources to be surrounded by water on 3 sides of this peninsula and not make use of it.

The day sail I just took off St. John a couple of weeks ago certainly didn't help me keep the sailing bug at bay.

I know there are a lot of locals on here. Let me know if you need a hand with anything. I can help do things while I learn from you. I have a lot to learn, but I've enjoyed the process so far.

I know there are sailing clubs in the Tampa/St Pete area. Good places to meet other sailors and get experience.

You might take a look at St. Petersburg Yacht Club*Sailing Center . Good training programs, reasonably good boats; and, very inexpensive.

FWIW...

They do have a lot of clubs and places to learn down here. I've been looking at several as I try to get my bearings.

I've volunteered indentured servitude to a few people already. Cheaper than schools.

Oh sure. I went out and rented a little 17' Trimaran toy sailboat thing today off the Dunedin Causeway.

We had to get out and push a few times, but nobody drown, so I should be able to handle the biggest boat I can find and start on my ocean crossing later this week.

It should only take a few days to get there, right?

Re: Surrounded By Water and No Experience - St. Pete

Well, I volunteered to help rj_whitten prep, sand and repaint the bottom of his boat today. We finally called it quits after dark and the first coat of anti-foul was on.

The job definitely wasn't fun in itself, but it wasn't bad enough to keep me from wanting to get a boat.

This could get expensive...
