Just checking into the forum. I hope this will help me find like minded people and a good way to learn about sailing and cruising. I'm wanting to learn some navigational basics and apply them to my voyages.

Welcome, I used to live Bradenton. SW FL is a great cruising ground. Lots of schools in FL too for learning navigation.

Thanks for responding. I am on the East coast near Cape Canaveral. It is very early in my learning, but I am sailing every week locally. It is a lot to learn, but I am certainly enjoying myself.

Great! That is the best way to learn -- get out there and do. Combine that with some formal training and it will shorten your learning curve.

Curious about your user name "nanofella". Does that mean you are a really tiny guy or you work with nano-tech? Or maybe both?

Nanofella is the just a screen name, but I do tend to have a small view of the world.

Hello from Landlocked Gainesville FL.

My recommendation based on what worked for me is to combine reading with real world experience. I had never been sailing in my life and caught the bug when I went out with a couple of friends. Came home and started reading everything I could find about boats, sailing and navigation but the majority of it made little sense. Then got a chance to crew on a delivery and all the stuff I had read started falling into place.

So came home, read some more, sailed some more and it came together.

I'm sure the local library will have a pretty good selection of books on all aspects of boating. You can also find courses online at various places. Try United States Power Squadrons® Safe boating fun thru education. They also offer classes in many locations around the US, definitely in FL.
