Hello fellow citizens! My name is Will and I spend my time working for the man as a Machinist in land locked Edmonton. I've been haunting these forums since '06 as I find them to be a fantastic source of information and stories. I grew up on the east coast (Prince Edward Island) and intended to take up sailing until the economy moved me here 6 years go. I spent a number of enjoyable afternoons sailing in my youth. That said, I have a good income, almost no debt, a workshop available, boating wood and laminate supplier, a fantastic carpenter, and a desire to build a small sailboat. Nothing large at first, more of a dingy for practice than anything much. I'm not sure if I'll get all the pieces to come together and actually accomplish the thing but it seems a good hobby. I don't suspect I'll be posting a great deal for a while but figure I may as well make myself known to all the interesting folk who inhabit these pages . Peace and blessings!

Gord, I've usually seen it as if one is sticking their tounge out at you.
I've seen it often, mainly on yahoo messenger or similar program.

Welcome aboard Will, There is an interesting site available online that re-prints boat plans previously published in Popular Mechanics magazines, including many sailboats from 7 to 27 feet. I actually built a 12 fishing runabout from the plans, but could have purchased a good used aluminum or fg boat for less money, and without many hours of work. I like the boat, but decided never to build another one. good luck if you decide to though, google "Svensons free boat plans." Since you are in Edmonton, the coast is within a reasonable distance, and you may wish to consider a "cruise and learn" vacation. This will put you aboard a newer sailing vessel 35' or so, with a sailing instructor for 5 or 6 days of full time sailing and instruction. Accomodations are on the boat, and could open a whole new area of sailing for you. BTW, dingy sailing is extremely fun, and if you choose to go that direction, nothing lost.
Good luck either way, and resurrect this thread once in a while to keep updating your progress. If you do build a boat, pics are usually appreciated.

Good to have you here. Normally I'd recommend buying a ready built boat in this economy but if you have your heart set on building one then have at it. It'll take you awhile and be more expensive but what the heck, eh?
