Bradenton, FL newbie

Hi all. New here wanted to introduce myself. I own a water sports company on Anna Maria island. My slice of sanity is a 28.5 morgan out island.. "Sea Fever".
I'm Planning to cruise to the keys this fall/winter weather permitting. From sarasota bay any advice? Ill be with my wife so I'd like to stay within 3-5 miles of land. This will be our first cruise of any real distance. We draw3.5 and height of 45 ft. Thanks everyone!

Plan one night in Cayo Costa and a night in Ft Myers Beach! Both good anchorages with easy access from the Gulf

Great. Ill reference that link. Thanks. Actually cayo costa is our furthest weekend so far. Did that on my oday 26.
-can I expect to be able to sail without many shoals within the give or take 3 miles from shore I hope to keep?
