No
On the shark thing, just good business sense to be to "doing something", besides don't really want something like that adopting an area it regards simply as a larder .
Kill or not don't matter, but if it was found I would throw in a few Greenies to capture it / negotiate a mutually acceptable agreement

You are kidding?
I have dived and spearfished all around Aus over the years including the area of the last victim and found tigers to be not be an issue. Slow and steady although certainly capable but Great Whites are another case as they regularly take divers and swimmers which seems to be on the increase with the current protection they are afforded.

Its one of those arrangements we have with nature.
They come up into our boats, we eat them.
We go into their ocean, they eat---

The east coast of Oz employs nets in many areas that are well documented to have prevented shark attacks on swimmers for many years yet the Greens are wishing to do away with those nets due to the occasional collateral damage to whales and sharks. The mesh on those nets is too large to endanger smaller species, most whales get freed and the dolphins are too smart.

As most sandgropers know, the west coast is a bit different to the east coast.
The main bathing beaches near Perth are 'protected' by a number of reefs that basically run north / south. There are a few breaks in those reefs, but they don't all line up, and so the reef historically have tended to keep big sharks away from the swimmers.
Typically once a year or so, a white pointer comes by and gets 'trapped' inside. Not finding other tucker it not suprisingly goes for a surfer or bather.
Shark nets are not a suitable solution, as there are hundred of whales that migrate up and down the WA coast and they also come inside these reefs. Often 100 metres off the surf line. They'd soon destroy any sharks nets they encountered, hence the way its managed now with good lookouts and lots of warning if ones about.
But if one is not seen beforehand and attacks a human, then what's this big issue with shooting it?
It is a fish. We kills tens of thousands of other fish daily for food, and I trust no one can sensibly think this single fish has some special rights? Think about it. It's already killed a human being.
We'd put down a dog that did it.
In some countries they'd put down a human that did it.
I'd personally not hesitate to put down a fish, and make sure it never did it again.
Cheers
JOHN

Surely no one thinks a fish has the same rights a person, especially if it has already attacked a human? We'd put down a dog that did it, so why not a shark.........

Agreed, if a particular shark likes the taste of human its gotta go. We'd put down a bear or cat that attacks people, we shoot racoons for getting in the trash.

Re: Why Are they Shooting Sharks in Australia ?
World human population is set to cross 7 Billion Monday, Halloween.
With such an abundant and available food source it is only amazing that it has been so lightly tapped. It is inevitable.
Human cuts off shark fin for soup.
Shark eats entire human for diner.
There is a comparative ethics debate lingering in those statements.

Fair enough, so dip your toes in the water when you see Jaws' fin breach the surface.
I think that if population control was the issue we could take care of that without the sharks help.

I think its safe to say its pretty much just the Japanese that cut the fins off of sharks, penis off tiger, horn off....
Not sure wed have a problem if it was a Japanese tourist eaten, wed just assume it was "payback"
Since it was not, we will find and destroy that mofo... before he eats again...
seriously though I could care less , but if they can't confirm it was a specific GW, isn't this kind of like a which hunt or something similar...

Re: Why Are they Shooting Sharks in Australia ?
Many years ago, I made a deal with the bears, I wouldn't go out in the woods to hunt them, and they wouldn't come on the boat to eat me, so far we have both kept our end. As stated before, the actual occurrence of shark attacks is really low, but the reporting of such attacks have been greatly increased, and aggrandized to the point that is ridiculous. I am sorry the man got eaten, there is not a call to try to exterminate sharks. How many people die from cancer every year? Or car wrecks?

I always thought its was the Chinese who were into Shark Fin Soup, Tiger Penis Power Pills, Birdsnest Soup etc....
Arabs love Rhino Horn for their daggers...
The Japanese are into Whales, Dolphins and the 'Russian Roulette' Fish....
Love that little buga..... Water World Fights Back....
