Trans World 41

would like any differances in contruction specs. on Trans World 41 W. Gardner and other builders of this boat such as Formosa 41. Is deck cored and, how many layers of glass on hull. Are some Trans World decks cored and, some solid? thanks for any help. rob.

actor, I wasn't trying to brush off your question with the leaky teaky club link, but there are many many versions and permutations of those Wm Garden style boats. ( I say style because he was given a lot of credit for those designs, yet was rarely compensated as a designer should be by the builders.)

So, yes, some where cored, some solid.
With so many different model names like Formosa, CT, Transworld, Yankee Clipper etc, it is dangerous to make generalizations about construction. Most would certainly have had plywood deck cores (but not all!), and I believe all had a solid glass hull. Layup schedules and thicknesses varied for many reasons, including the price of oil. The quality of workmanship even varied from one hull # to the next. Some were plagued with blisters, other not so much. And of course, there were a few versions with a wood hull.

My CT41 was delivered new without teak decks, which was one reason I made the purchase, having heard so many nightmares about that issue. What I found out later was that she was built with teak decks, then they were removed before she left the yard. In any case, I avoided the leaky deck troubles.

So, there are many stories and myths and anecdotes about these boats, and the condition of the used ones will be all over the spectrum.

However, I loved my CT41 and found she sailed quite well and would have been a fine boat for sailing the tradewind routes.

I've talked to the owner of the boat that we're both looking at and he says that the hull is solid fiberglass and the deck is also. The teak has caused no leaks since 1978. I know some will say that after 33 years it's ready to start leaking while others would believe that after 33 years it's pretty well proven to be watertight. I wouldn't know what to believe but being the eternal (infernal) optimist I would hope for the latter.

Many have said that with so much wood on the inside that it would be depressing..........yeah, right. Judging by what I've seen of that boat let me be depressed. The masts are wood and they need painted.......at least. It looks like they've been unprotected for some time and that would give water a chance to soften the wood. Maybe....maybe not.

Let's keep this boat a secret and not tell anyone that it's on that auction site. What do you think the selling price is going to be? The one I'm looking at is in Beverly Hills so that may jack the price up about $10,000. California, ya' know. Have a great day.
