Re: Russian subs.

Interesting but, as an ex-bubble head - not the big of a deal IMO. Especially given today's technology (i.e. sonar).

Basically it's a publicity stunt by the Russians making a geopolitical statement / Putin's running around waving his arms saying "Look at us! Look at us!"

Odd.
At the time [Apr 5, 2018], Popular Mechanics reported it as The British submarine HMS “Trenchant”, and America's Seawolf-class USS “Connecticut”, and Los Angeles-class USS “Hartford”.

Yep then as well but run ships registry numbers and compare silhouettes

Both submarines, as well the U.K. Royal Navy submarine HMS Trenchant, are participating in the biennial exercise in the Arctic to train and validate the warfighting capabilities of submarines in extreme cold-water conditions...

Look at the jet stream it always does this type stuff in a low solar activity period.

Average is about 40°F in December. Saturday will be -17°F
Bet we get record cold temps there in January. Or at least close .
Heck it's only 16°F in fairbanks . And forecast to be -30 on Sunday.

Heck here in Seattle we have had a record high temperature the lowest high in December only 24° F.

It's called weather so big deal

Re: Science & Technology News

Oddity Solved: The 1987 photo of HMS Superb, USS Billfish, and USS Sea Devil in a North Pole rendezvous, was taken during a visit to the pole - not during a simultaneous ice breaktrough, which is somewhat of a 'big deal'.
Your is an entirely different story, and achievement, not directly related to the stories, under discussion.

Actually shows that we had the navigational technology well over 30 years ago so doing it now is like no big deal .

However one would have " by the wordings of the msm " the Russians breaking through 1.5 meters of sea ice in the barents sea in December would be happening at the end of winter . And the end of winter 1987 rendezvous to have happened in the beginning of winter this year . It's an optical of the state of sea ice through the decades

The actual positioning of 3 subs in the same vicinity of the ocean is not any real accomplishment for those that know the navigating capability and sonar mapping ability of modern subs .

It's purely optics for 5hose that don't know. Saying see what we can do we are the big kid on the block .

“From a military, geographic, and scientific perspective, the Arctic Ocean is truly unique, and remains one of the most challenging ocean environments on earth,”said Navy Rear Admiral James Pitts, commander of the Undersea Warfighting Development Center.

But, what would he know, compared to our own infallible truck driver?

Re: Science & Technology News

Russia has long had designs on the Artic Ocean. It has planted flags on the bottom and other stunts. This stunt is in the same vein.

Of course the military is used by every nation as a propaganda machine from time to time
