Re: Random Photo Thread

During the gold rush era, William Vanderbilt ran a transport service to get those with gold fever from the east coast of the USA to the west coast. One leg of that trip was by steam driven vessels across Lake Nicaragua. The wreckage of one of those vessels is still visible near San Carlos, Nicaragua.

Probably way more lucrative than panning for gold.

Re: Random Photo Thread

Awesome stuff that I can't hope to match, but I'll add this pic of a "Newfoundland family" taken in Bonne Bay last summer.

Great photo. I am thinking the smaller two are lobster boats.

Of the larger one, I am curious about that rig is on the port side. Looks like I can see a couple large diameter pipes associated with it. Do you know what it is? Where did you take it?

Nope - my knowledge of fishing boats is limited to eating the results of their labours. Photo was taken at Bonne Bay, NL - https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Bon...!4d-57.9173249

I'm going to say that hose gear is for pumping fish live out of a purse seine.
Could be herring,capelin or salmon.

The hose hung in rigging is dropped into seined up fish. The fish & some water are sucked by a large vacuum pump & deposited in the fish hold thru the blue hose.

I don't have a pic of a seiner on hand right now.

But here is a link to local Facebook group showing various local fishing boats & gear for various species.
