Why not? How about windage in the worst possible place, following seas, etc.

Now, the picture below is from an ad that includes a lot of pretty good other pictures. So why did they include this one?

That's not necessarily a bad picture. It shows the condition of the boat, and it would appear to be mostly cosmetic issues (as well as no mast, obviously). Anyway, if the price was right, nothing wrong with buying a boat that looks like that.

I wouldn't call myself that much of an optimist, but the point is that a "good" picture is one that clearly and accurately portrays the condition of the boat. Even if the boat is in really bad condition, at least the picture shows that accurately.

A "bad" picture is one like I posted above, that is so out of focus that it tells you absolutely nothing. Or a picture that is either so far away, or so close-up, that it doesn't show you anything useful. Or the interior pictures where there is so much junk laying around--dirty dishes, laundry, etc.--that you can't even tell what the condition of the interior is. And, of course, there's the picture of the head that appears to have been recently used by someone with serious stomach distress, and was never flushed before being photographed. That's just an EEEEEW!!!

Along with the kind of bad picture that doesn't help you asses the boat are the ones that are just blatantly fraudulent. Like, when they post a picture of the boat with gleaming topsides and glistening hardware, but the pictures were actually taken 15 years ago and the boat is now a derelict pile of the stuff that was in that toilet mentioned above.

That's the sort of thing that I consider a "bad" picture in a boat ad.

And speaking of which...

Here we have what appears to be a Morgan 36 OI, but note how the top right picture has been stretched out. Trying to make the boat look longer, perhaps? If that was just an accident, then how dumb do you have to be not to fix the picture before posting it, or get a better one? If it wasn't an accident, then it's just plain fraud. Either way, a good example of a "bad" picture.

They didn't stretch the picture. It appears to be a scanner malfunction. If they were trying to make the boat look bigger, they were also trying to make the water, in the picture below it, look bigger as well.
