Nukes, Nubs And Coners

A humorous, and interesting/informative look at life aboard a nuclear submarine:

"Nukes, Nubs And Coners: The Unique Social Hierarchy Aboard A Nuclear Submarine" ~ by Aaron Amick

Getting assigned to your first sub doesn’t make you a submariner and once you become one you’ll find yourself in a social structure unlike any other.

Quote:
”... A new crewmember is a Non-Useful Body, or NUB. He or she uses our limited supply of space, water, food, and oxygen. They are not welcome, but BUPERS (Bureau of Personnel) keeps sending them. The NUB is easily identifiable as he will be the only crewman wearing a command ball cap with the ship's name and no Dolphins symbol on the front. They have their qualification card in their rear pocket at all times and had better have a small notebook in their hand for studying...
... Everyone, officer or enlisted, is a NUB when they report to their first submarine. They are treated with contempt. In the case of the officer, it’s respectful contempt, sir. The NUB is expected to qualify in submarines within 12 months...”

Do you think 'nub' is pronounced 'noob'?

No.
The term 'NUB' [Non Useful Body] is often mistaken, by nubs, to be synonymous with 'noob'.

PS: Thanks for the straight line.

Interesting. Thanks for posting. I have always thought about how I would love to spend a week or 2 on a sub. Probably no longer though... They are an impressive breed for sure.

Re: Nukes, Nubs And Coners

I knew the author, STSCS(SS) Amick when he was knocking around Groton, CT on attack boats. It's good to see that he put his talents to good use. Gord is right...nub rhymes with "hub", not "boob".

NUB is Navy and rather British Navy.
Nob noob newb are social media inventions I think.
I’ve have dived on several Submarine war wrecks. The One sunk off the shoreline of PEI the NUBS and one officer survived. They were on shore stealing food from a farm.

A submarine commander when asked how did the six months on, six off rotation affected his marriage responded that:
" Every year we get six months of happiness"
