IP31 or IP 32

Hello All,
I'm relatively new to cruising, had a Westsail 28 for a few years but had to sell, now in the market for another boat. I'm looking for something similar, but with wheel steering, am presently looking at IP 31's and 32's. Like the 32's, but they cost twice as much...are they twice as nice? Any ideas welcome. Good luck to Fay-ee's...

Hi,

My guess would be that the price difference comes from the fact that the IP 31 is a mid/late 80's model, while the IP 32 is an early/mid 90's model, and you're primarily witnessing the $$ depreciation curve.

Not knowing anything specific about these models, but drawing on boating experience in general, I think there is likely to be little difference between the two. After 15/20 years, ownership maintenence is the primary deciding factor on condition, not age.

From the look of the yachtworld lists IP's seem more expensive because they are on average substantially newer boats than the Westail. The extra age discounts the value more. The gear and rigging attached to the boat decpreciates more than the hull does. Westsail hulls are still going strong even as old as many of them are.

You might also take a look at the numbers here:

Sail Calculator Pro v3.52 - 2000+ boats

You can compare the boats. Both the Westsail and The IP's are boats that are quite large compared to similar boats that claim similar length. If you compare other boat displacements, beams, length overall you can see that these boats are alot bigger than the basic numbers indicate. I could see why you might think they are of a similar nature.

I think he's comparing the IP 31 to the IP 32?

Cool

look at the IP32 if you can afford it. much better than the older 31. this is a fairly stout boat with plenty of room for living and stowage. full keel with deep bilge. no wood core. nice boats and one of the best IP designs IMHO.

Both are nice boats, but the IP 32 seems to have one of the most loyal group of owners of any of the IPs, and that's saying something.
