Here is one reason for anchoring problems in Florida
This in the Miami news:
MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – Police said a 17-month-old baby died Friday after he fell from a boat while his mother was taking a nap.
According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers, the father of the baby had gone out for groceries, leaving the child in the care of the mother.
The mother reportedly took a two-hour nap and left the child unattended. When she awoke, the baby was no longer on the sailboat.
Miami Beach Police said they received the call of the missing baby at around 5:45 p.m.
The Miami Beach Police Department, MBPD Marine, MBPD Fire, Miami Fire, Miami-Dade County Fire and Coast Guard were all called in to assist.
An officer found the baby and they immediately rushed him to Ryder Trauma Center. The 17 month old died sometime later.
Miami Beach Police said they have taken over the investigation from the FWC.
There are no charges at this time, but that can change pending outcome of investigation.
An FWC official said the couple lives on the sailboat between Star and Palm Island.
FWC added that they have had issues with this couple. The couple allegedly doesn’t get along well with other people that lived on boats around them.
Authorities have not identified the couple.

That certainly doesn't help.
Unfortunately, people are not going to hear about the 24 kids that drown in Florida pools and spas every year while unattended by their parents.

While the child's death is tragic.
The issue as I see it is some live aboard boats look like floating junk wagons-- tattered sails, partially inflated RIBs and stuff lashed to the life lines.
Kind of like me parking a rusted Pinto in front of your house for a few weekS.

Yes, weeks or months. If they could find a way to get rid of the squatters and the derelicts, the anchoring problem would not be a problem.

Really people?
How about the anguish of that mother and father?
And the heaviness in the heart of any parent who reads this story.
Where is your humanity that the comments turn on anchoring issues?

geez no sensitivity at all. shame on you all.
and the reason fla is getting bad isnot only because bad loooking boats is GREED [plain and simple.
get over it and stop blaming dead children on your inability to anchor.
that happened a LONG time BEFORE that child died.

Or the ones that run into traffic left in a hot car home with the junky boyfriend etc, etc. Bad parenting is bad parenting.

Re: Here is one reason for anchoring problems in Florida
Sensitivity aside, there is probably a lesson to be learned from this, and so it is worth discussing. But I do not see this, in any way, related to the "anchoring problems in Florida." This could happen anywhere, anytime, whether the boat is a derelict, or in pristine condition, anchored in a remote location, on a paid mooring, or even at a dock. Never mind that incidents like this are so extraordinarily unusual as to be statistically insignificant.
Trying to tie the debates about anchoring in Florida to this kind of event just strikes me as ridiculous.

Re: Here is one reason for anchoring problems in Florida
i'm sorry that some of you mistook my reason for starting this thread. The intent was simply to point out that this is one more incident for the people who are trying to ban anchoring in Florida waters to point to.

I agree with you zee however you and I both know the media they will bring up this one rare event and use it as " dirty laundry" to help politicians get what they want. ( BTW my son was killed in an arson house fire when he was 3 and a half. While I was at work. ). I do sympathise with the parents I have an idea how they feel.

Re: Here is one reason for anchoring problems in Florida
Sounds like inattentive care taker problems anywhere. Remember the rock star whose child fell from a penthouse window, while the care taker was cleaning another room.

,truth, unfortunately.
the
root goes way back before these were issues. is based on perception. anchor outs pay no taxes. goes from there
