Re: Favorite Nautical Quotations

Per Tangvald was a famous Norwegian sailor. He wrote a book called Sea Gypsy. Two of hi s seven wives died at sea. In 1991, he and his young daughter died when his sailboat went aground in Bonaire. His son Thomas, who was around 11, survived. Thomas later disappeared sailing solo at sea in 2014. His half sister Virginia, upon hearing of his disappearance and likely death, provided one of my favorite quotes.

"Our family has experienced many tragedies, but when you put yourself on the quest for freedom and finding one's true nature, there is no other way of living that does not feel like a tragedy in itself. That is the legacy of Per Tangvald."

"Splice the mainbrace."

Eventually the order “Splice the mainbrace” came to mean that the crew would receive an extra ration of rum, and was issued on special occasions: after victory in battle, the change of a monarch, a royal birth, a royal wedding or an inspection of the fleet.

“Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.”
~ Mark Twain [some experts believe this quote was actually spoken by Twain's second wife, Shania.]

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

The best cure for seasickness is to hug a tree.
