Trucking our Boat

We are in San Carlos Mexico (sea of cortez) and are thinking about having our boat trucked to Florida. The Marina here can arrange for it to be transported to Tuscon Arizona and they are trying to find a company to truck it from there to Florida (Jacksonville/ft lauderdale/miami). Destination in florida is not important as we will be sailing to europe Georgia is also fine.

Our boat:

42 foot length
13 foot beam
7 foot keel

Anybody got a transporter they can recommend?

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Re: Trucking our Boat

perhaps you know already, but there are several ship transporters that pick up and disgorge vessels just north of La Paz in Bahia Falsa which is about 9 nm out of la Paz. its the shallow bay off the Ferry terminal.

Good luck

Yes we are aware of this but they are rather more expensive than trucking

Re: Trucking East to West Coasts - costs?

I am seriously looking at moving from DC (Boat is just south of Annapolis) to the Port Townsend, WA. When I bought the boat several years ago I inherited a sweetheart trucking deal - from Lake Ouichita, Arkansas, to Oriental, SC for ~9$K - but that had its roots in the PO buying a bigger boat from a SC broker...

Do any of you have ballpark estimates for a 20,000lb 41ft OA, 38 OD Cabo Rico? Any recent (this decade?) experience?

Re: Trucking our Boat

Also check with boat yards at your destination about scheduling to restep your boat, last year the yards seemed to be backed up in Florida.

At least on US roads, for a cross country haul the issue is not the keel length, but rather the overall height of the boat from the keel to the very highest point. If that is more than 12 feet, it gets a LOT harder and more expensive.

If it is close, it really helps to remove whatever railings, cowls, dodgers, etc to make that limit. Standard highway bridge clearance on US highways is 13.5 feet. Even on a low-boy trailer, if your draft is about 7 feet (which is what I guess you really mean by "7 ft keel")you might be very close...

It is hard to predict costs even--with the same company. They will give a big price break if they have a return load in their schedule. It pays to contact as many as you can for quotes to find that one guy who has a reverse load just before--or after--yours.

Re: Trucking our Boat

Might different states have different rules concerning width?
A truck by itself, or a truck with a chase vehicle, or a truck with both a lead vehicle and a chase vehicle?

Over-width permits are on a per state basis, so the requirements do vary from state to state. Some things may be required for one part of the trip, but not another. Generally the further over-width or over-height you are, the more requirements come with the permits, the more expensive it gets, and the more your choice of routes becomes limited.
