Hi,

the pot holder on our trusty old gas stove keep rusting.
I suspect it's due to the heat the experience.

No I'm wondering, is there a remedy?
I have a welder available. Is there a specific stainless grade (I'm in Europe, so a European type description would be good) which does not have this issue, so that he could weld new ones?

We do not want to buy a new stove.

Brass or bronze will do better. Aluminum at a pinch.
Heat is a killer for stainless. I've rusted out plenty of stainless charcoal grills.

How would titanium do? It's not terribly expensive if it would last the life of your stove:

How can they but it together? Would hard soldering survive the heat?

I know this is not exactly what you asked, but I see the struggle and custom fabrication is quite expensive. What about getting a new one? One that will not have the same problems?

this is the one I used. The area you are having difficulty with on yours is glass on this one so it is simple to clean and it can never rust.

There are many with this type of styling available. Just eliminate the stainless.

Thanks Chotu, that's a nice one, the reason we do not want to replace ours though, is that it has also a flame going downward.

Great for making antipasti and the like.

We do not have a conventional oven. So for baking it's the Omnia on the stove (works great!) as grill it's the downward flame of the stove.

Unfortunately they do not sell the one with a third burner pointed downward anymore.

I feel your pain, I have a similar problem with the stainless pot holder in my sea-swing. It seems unique to me so I have no idea where to get a new one when it is finally done. This isn't much help but I have resigned myself to considering that pot holder as one of those sacrificial things. Could your welder make you 2 or 3 new ones and you just leave them stowed until you can't stand the old one anymore?

304 stainless steel would probably be your best bet. You should rapidly cool it after welding for better corrosion resistance.

Inconel would work better for your application but no idea about availability.

Ask your welder what he has wire or rod for. Inconel is used in high temperature areas but if your welder doesn't have filler rod for it he won't weld it. 304 would probably work fine for your stove and your welder probably has wire/rod/filler for it.

What you have looks like steel that was coated. No wonder it rusts. When one says "stainless" that may be misleading. There are all kinds of alloys out there. A lot of charcoal or BBQ grills are not stainless but chrome plated steel. See if a magnet sticks to your existing grate. If it stainless it will not be very magnetic. Some stainless alloys are slightly magnetic but I bet your stove grates are mild steel that was coated wither with enamel or ceramic.

In Europe there is A2 stainless steel instead of 304 and A4 stainless steel instead of 316.

I would replace with one of those that handles heat best.

Also, make sure you passivate it instead of just cleaning it. You need the iron contamination out of that surface or it will always come back. In Europe they sell a Wichard product to passivate it.
