Ozone generator

Has anyone used an ozone generator to freshen and clean the inside of your sailing/ cruising vessel? Specifically I am interested in folks who have plentiful electronics on board - VHF radios, CB, Ham, SSB, laptops, cell phones, chartplotters, whatever else… would using an ozone generator have any harmful effects on any of these types of electronics? Hoping to combat old boat smell/ germs/ mold spores/ etc. thank you 🙏

Re: Ozone generator

Rather than the “bandaid” approach, you would be better served identifying and removing the source(s) of any offensive odors. Ozone can attack gaskets, rubber hoses, belts, etc… as well as coax, wire insulation and plastic in pump motors.

Re: Ozone generator

We do use our ozone generator to get rid of smells maybe twice a year. Does a decent job getting rid of the damp smell after a long passage. We only run it for maybe 2 hours, which isn't really supposed to be long enough to be fully effective, but it does give some short term relief.

I also agree that finding the source of the smells is the best approach. The smells will come back in as little as a few days depending on the smell.

Re: Ozone generator

We use a small12v ozone generator(built for cars) when we leave the boat for a month or two.
We set it up on a timer so it runs 4 hours twice a week. We have left the boat on the hard in Green cove springs Florida this way for 2 months in the summer. We came back to no mold and minimal smell.
We also run it about once a month on a day we are ashore. We have been doing this for 3 years now and haven't seen any issues with electronics.

Re: Ozone generator

I use a room sized unit. Run it a couple times a year. But had a diesel fuel leak recently and have been running it to clean to odor out after that.

And yes I have the normal electronics plus TV, sound bar, laptop, cell phones, etc etc with problems
