New to Norfolk VA and New to Sailing

Hi, I'm Isaac. I moved to Virginia a few months ago. My older brother, Nick, recommended that i look into buying a boat instead of renting an apartment. I was just wondering about how much it costs and where some marina locations are at and would appreciate any advice.

This would be a good place to start: Norfolk Naval Sailing Center - Navy Sailing School

Is anyone familiar with the base marina there at Norfolk?

I was there a few years ago. What you want to know? I'm more familiar with the Little Creek base.

Dockage on Little creek, at that time, was close to $4/ft, I think. They have all the normal rules for insurance and such that you're going to find out in a private marina.

Heavily guarded.

Hard to gain access for your friends without DoD ID etc.

No liveaboards I don't believe.

Random dog searches of boat and vehicle

but cheaper than off base marinas. Willoughby would be close though at maybe $6.00/ft

Are you in the area yet? A quick trip to each will give you an idea if you would want to live there. Most of the local marinas have their prices online and range 8-12 a foot + metered electric and another 150-300 per person for live aboard. Scotts creek and waterside in the winter are cheaper around $6. Norfolk has an annual boat tax, some of the neighboring cities don't. Littlecreek is convenient by water, but not the greatest part of the city for by land. Lynnhaven inlet in VB a few miles southeast is nicer place to live if you can clear a 35' bridge. Other marinas farther north like York river are set up better for liveaboards with larger shower rooms, lounge & kitchen.
