I have had great experiences at Cobb's, but only staying briefly to make repairs. Worth a call.

Re: Liveaboard marinas in Virginia....

I spent the winter 2 years ago at Tidewater and I thought the dock and bathroom and laundry facilities were fine. Nice people running it but I heard there was turnover last year so not sure who’s managing it now. Quite a few liveaboards and a decent restaurant/bar located on site. You need a car or Uber to get groceries, etc. Cheap ferry to take you across the river and I found it interesting watching the boat traffic heading down inland waterway.
Then in the spring I moved to Cobbs to get hauled out and liked them a lot too. It’s family owned/operated and I found everyone to be very reasonable. No restaurant on site but many restaurants and various stores nearby within walking distance. Also, close to airport if you need to fly somewhere. Cobbs fills up so if you go there make a reservation as soon as you know. Also, if you’re going to need a haulout at some point, schedule that well ahead of time. Both places have small ships store. I’d say Cobbs is a little more “shippy” and Tidewater has more t shirts etc. But Tidewater is very good at handling mail and packages. I ordered several items from Defender and had delivered to marina while I was away for a few weeks and they held them for me.
I think they’re both very good marinas. Cobb has mechanics and haul out capability where Tidewater has neither.

Re: Liveaboard marinas in Virginia....

I spent a bit more than a year at Ocean Yacht Marina, a short walk from Tidewater. Lots of liveaboards, average to below average facilities, and I thought it was very inexpensive. Downtown Portsmouth is nice (the rest of Portsmouth really isn't) and only a few minutes' walk from either Ocean Yacht Marina or Tidewater. Whole Foods and Instacart both deliver there, as does Amazon etc. for anything else you need.

My choice was dictated by work I found in the area that I could walk to from Ocean Yacht Marina, and I seldom ventured further than I could walk.
