For those who didn't know, it was originally a BBC radio play, and from that became a TV series, and after that the books were written and published.

I know people who swear by the original radio play, but as yet have not been able to track it down.

Find out what the young geeks are actually up to after hours. Try to find a "hackerspace" in your neck of the woods. Metalwork, CNC machining and woodwork, welding, homemade plasma cutters, 3-D printing, hydroponics, etc etc.

As they hit their 40s, they're gonna discover boating... then watch out.

No, L-E.... the OpenCPN guys, like the Pi-pilots, and anyone else who is into non-commercial, user-adaptive coding, is welcome in any version of *my* future.

It was more a comment about coders, in general, not being actual 'producers' of anything that will be useful in the 'New World Economy' after SHTF.

But I guess I was specifically referring to game-coders and those who make stuff that is pretty much useless for anything much even today.

In the original HHGTTG episode, I particularly enjoyed the 'colourist' who, when presenting the newly re-engineered hair-dresssers scissors (made from two pieces of bamboo if I recall) got all sniffy when Ford and Arthur began rubbishing their efforts.

"So, smarty-pants, you tell us what colour they should be?"

But I did enjoy the 'instant wealth' of the 'New World Economy' on pre-historic Earth, achieved by adopting the leaf as general currency, but then having to implement a scheme of mass forest fires in order to prevent hyper-inflation, as everyone of course had become immediately and immensely wealthy, such that the going rate of exchange was about one ship's biscuit to half a small deciduous forest.

And now, back to my bath. Pass me the ginnand tonnix, will you old chap?

I've been practising not hitting the ground and, thus far, I've been a failure. Haven't been able to distract myself sufficiently at the crucial point before hitting the ground, I guess.

Yes, correct. The five volume trilogy is a reference to the comment in the intro to the original hard copies, which stated that 'So Long' was the fourth in the trilogy, and 'Mostly Harmless' the fifth book in the trilogy.

It was part of the his "not married, no children, and doesn't want to hear from any more Surrey estate agents" schtick.

Did you see the TV special on DA a few years back in which he told the story of the origin of the name of the lead singer of "the loudest rock band - in fact, the loudest noise of any kind in the history of the universe", Disaster Area's, Hotblack Desiato, which was the name of a real estate agency in the London suburb of Islington where he was living at the time he wrote the books?

I now can't help myself and attempt to use street signs and real estate (and other business names) as make-believe characters in my as-yet-unwritten-first-novel....

For example, there's a sign on the Hwy north of me pointing towards the villages of Cowper and Brushgrove that I think makes an excellent 'character name'. Another route into Brushgrove includes the route to Lawrence, so I imagine the two Brushgrove brothers, Cowper and Lawrence.

Not far away is another potential character sign, pointing towards Angourie Wooloweyah, which I can't help but see as a mysterious Aboriginal woman, possibly an elder and lore-mistress.

In nearby Grafton is the law practice of Burridge, Harris and Flynn - which I now can't help viewing except as:
BURRIDGE, Harris and Flynn

And I wonder what role those two brothers/cousins/father & son will have in some future writing...

It keeps me amused on long drives in the country, anyway...

Sad loss to the world of writing when DA passed. RIP.
