Re: Do You Get Flack for Being 'House-less' ?

Jack,
I second Astrid - beautiful boat!!!
and you forget no utility bills, plus no mowing the lawn, plowing the snow (for us northerners), car payments, gas - us sailors don't need much fuel :-)

Maybe you could help me. I have gone through three lawnmowers already trying to mow my lawn but the mower keeps sinking even when I take a run up. What am I doing wrong?

So, you're giving him Flak about Flack?

Re: Do You Get Flack for Being 'House-less' ?

When I was 17, I left home for Hawaii, and lived on the beach, in the shadow of a huge hotel, I got a lot of flak from the local rent a cops, due to the fact I was near where the rich people stayed. I then sailed all over the south pacific, then came ashore and worked on vessels and obtained land and built a house. I am now in the process of reversing the procedure, I now have my dream vessel, and am in the process of selling off all my possessions that won't fit into a live aboard lifestyle. One day I will be a beach bum somewhere on the land with a hammock under a palm tree. If there is one thing I have learned in this life, it is possessions own you, not the other way around. I hope that I am blessed enough to die aboard my vessel on the way to some other place that seems interesting. There is no end to the teeny brains that feel threatened by someone that cannot fit easily into a predetermined box of some kind, I run into that all the time, just by virtue of my chosen profession as a mariner. Why on earth would I give any weight to the opinion of someone who cannot begin to wrap their head around the concept of living on a boat that allows one the freedom to go anywhere. Your vessel is a manifestation of your will, how you choose to live in that manifestation is your will. My Father was fond of saying "Don't let the other guy do your thinking for you!". This forum is a wonderful place to interact with kindred spirits.

Re: Do You Get Flack for Being 'House-less' ?

Just the other day I cleand out three closets. Didn't even look at what I was taking off the hanger, just piled it into plastic bags, hauled it down to the charity drop and pushed it in. Now I need a suit, but don't have one (ain't gettin' one either!).

Then I took out the "Bill Box" well actually three of them. It had bills and other papers from 30 years ago. The original Bill of sale for my 1974 Maverick. All of it went into the shredder, burned up one, went to Sams Club and got another. That will end up as an anchor somewhere when I'm done.

When the house sells, everything goes, no yard sale, just call the Salvation Army and say "Take it all, not just the good stuff, that's your payment for taking it all."

I have a 19' caravan and a SUV to pull it. That will get me to Texas where I will buy a boat, get rid of the caravan and SUV when I'm done refitting. Then Leave! Oh the luxury of space I will have on that 37' boat!

The only one I cared about getting flak from is not here anymore (and she would approve anyway) so I'm content with my decision. I'm going out to spend the grandkids inheritance! (It wouldn't make them rich anyway.)

Re: Do You Get Flack for Being 'House-less' ?

Haven't gotten involved with this thread because the title seemed absurd.

If one is the sort of person who gives a flying fark at a rolling donut as to the opinion of others when it comes to the "right" possessions or the "proper" way of life, one is unsuited in my view to a life at sea, near sea or within smelling distance of the aforementioned.

I sail in part to avoid such constipated, limited, small peoples' verdicts on the approved life. Such brief lives flicker inside boxes, and illuminate nothing.

I'm not all that concerned about what others think in this regard either, but if you live in the real world you have to deal with this and its not so easy for some. To view those that struggle with it as "unsuited" in some way is a pretty narrow view in itself. IMHO

Re: Do You Get Flack for Being 'House-less' ?

Not having been in the "Dating Pool" for over 40 years I joined a Dating Service the other day. I am very up front about my plans. I get lots of looky loos but very few responses. The responses I get start out OK but by the time they realise that I'm serious about living aboard, they want to be "just friends". I will not compromise my intended lifestyle for anyone of the opposite sex. And they have to make their decision on their own, not to try and "please" me.
