Coronado 1972 30ft

I just purchased a 1972 Coronado 30ft project boat. I hear a lot of negativity about these boats. Some say they are not for open water others say not a good boat. Could anyone give me a little feedback. She needs a lot of TLC but it just sounds like a great opportunity to learn something new. Please give me your opinions. Thanks in advance

I just bought a 72 Coronado 30. Had her for a month. I love it. Handles great, goes pretty good and can handle some strong winds. I sail in the San Juans. Only negative so far is that it doesn't handle very well going in reverse.

Ignore the naysayers,we had a 1969 Coronado 25 and loved her! Tough little wale of a boat that took 15 foot waves and kept going no problem. Coronado's are slow but heavy and very well built , nothing fancy but great boats. We now have Seafarer 38 and part of me regrets not looking harder for Coronado 35. Do your tlc and enjoy your boat ...remember it's your boat not anyone else's so you be the judge on what it's capable of.

Love sailing her.
I'm sure you have a folding prop ,going in reverse is not great .

We had a 27' in 1973, great boat, not the sexiest but very roomy for a 27' and well built. most boats will handle a lot more than you can. Enjoy

I recently acquired a Coronado 35. Me and my wife love it. I've had a few different boats, this one being the biggest I've personally owned but I've been on many larger ones and I have to say I'm impressed as to the room and functionality of the 35 as a live aboard. I'm currently rebuilding the trans but I believe it will be a good cruiser. So far my own personal issue with it is that there is no deck storage lockers or lazerets to store lines or bumpers above deck. But other than that it's a solid boat.

My first boat was a Coronado 25, tough little unit. The local lake is a shallow lake and it's common to have 3 /4/5 foot waves of very short duration, due to the shallows.

Add some rail bait, tighten the sails up, and hang on. The boat took a beating and never flinched. She didn't point aswell as others, but she was powerful. I would have like a trim tab on the rudder?

I was seriously considering a Coranado 34/35, before I sourced my HR33.

I Also have a 1978 Hunter 25, which was heavily modified inside. The truth of the matter is, I liked my Coronado, much much much better then this Hunter.

i just like big ol heavy glass boats, I feel safe in them.

Bottom line, make what you have work for you, a lot of opportunity in your new boat.

I've lived aboard a 1970 Coronado 30 for almost 2 years, fixing it up as I can. It was a marina repossession in 2014.

I'm happy with it's roominess, as well as how it sails. I've made a few upgrades, with more yet to come as I prepare to take it to Alaska next spring/summer. I've re-powered it with a Yanmar diesel (whole drive-line and fuel system as well), replaced running rigging, rewired the 12V system, replaced thru-hulls, and other small upgrades. Significant upgrades remaining are to replace chainplates, route load path of lower shrouds from small deckplates to the hull/liner, get a better look at the keel joint, and also shimming the rudder post as there's about 1/16"-1/8" of wiggle.

Everyone I've met who's familiar with the boat (either owned one or sailed aboard one) comments that they're very sturdy, and sail well. Two previous owners of Coronado 30's have told me they regret selling theirs, and actively keep an eye out for one in good condition.

If any previous owners out there have something negative to say about them, please let us know! There really isn't much info out there on these boats.
