Visa requirements / buying a boat in Australia

I'm heading to Australia to buy a sailboat. My plan is to stay there and work on her for a few months and then sail
Australian waters. I'm looking for insight on Visa requirements for sailors on their boats down under.

If you are under 30 maybe a working visa good for 12 months - hint - you don't have to work.
If you are on a 90 day visitor visa a side trip to NZ every three months to reset the clock may work.

I'm 'strayan so have never had to deal with this.

We’re in Australia at the moment.
Came to pick up the boat here. Visa was straight forward and so was the extension we needed to finish projects and sail around until leaving to cross the Indian Ocean.
