Re: Sailing from Boston to New York

I’d skip Nantucket. Take the canal for sure.

Nantucket sound can be unpleasant with wind against tide and you want to do it twice in two days. I’d pass.

I understand the desire to make all these stops but you do need to know that you are going to be off season. Many many services close the weekend of October 9th.

If you get the current timing right you’ll be able to do Provincetown to Newport in about 18 hours.

Plan your fuel and water stops ahead. Confirm if the facilities are open at that time of year.

You may find that you need to locate facilities that cater to fisherman as well as yachting types.

Re: Sailing from Boston to New York

Thanks for all this info!

This is SO valuable. Knowing that most facilities close after October 9, I will make it a "less touristy" trip and more a "get south ASAP" if weather allows...

I wish I could leave now as the weather this week is beautiful....🥲

Thanks guys!

It depends on where you go. For example, New Bedford is a major fishing port and most stuff stays open year-round, including Sea Fuels where the diesel price is good. Cuttyhunk is pretty much shut down, but I bet there will be some moorings available in the pond you could hang on. Newport would still have most everything open. Block Island will mostly be shut down, but again you could probably hang on a mooring if you wanted to.

Re: Sailing from Boston to New York

I'll second the recommendation to go through the CC Canal, then you can go to Edgartown MV if you wish, then Block Island. Or skip the Vineyard and stop at Cuttyhunk Island.

Going outside and then through Pollack's Rip to Nantucket is not for the faint of heart, nearly every time I've been through it, a total of 6 times, it has been dense fog with strong tidal current. A real white knuckle passage.

Safe journey.

The first part will be to sail along the coast because my wife does not like the open ocean and the rough seas…🤷*♂️

I have a 70’ mast but I think I am good to do the East River…

Thanks.

Well a 70 ft. mast rules out the ICW so offshore is the only way south.
