Re: Some People Should Not Be Permitted To Own A Boat

Well, I'll try again, todays article. I am surprised he claims that a boat is like a child, because if anyone treats a child like this man treats his boats, they would have them taken off him for neglect.

For a little history on this guy,

Ship owner Les Dick pleads not guilty to six safety-related charges | The Examiner

Here is a good story from 2013 where he pledged to repair The Defender, and of course it was in poor shape then.

Les Dick pledges Defender repair | Tasmanian Times

And this article is a boating article. No guesses that he's not liked a lot in the boating fraternity around here.

And here is a really good history of the vessel going back to the 1800's.

There are organizations, groups of people that would willingly purchase boats like this from this man to restore them for history. But he's got a reputation in that he always wants top dollar if he would part with it at all.

Re: Some People Should Not Be Permitted To Own A Boat

Here in Philadelphia we have a few examples of how hard it is too keep old ships going.

We have the
WWII Bacuna, a sub
Spanish American war Olimpia
Trade schooner, turned restaurant, Mushulu
Wooden schooner, Gazella, last of the Portugese Great White Fleet
USS United States

The Olimpia was last hauled sometime around 1955. The Bacuna, Moshulu, and Olimpia all sit in the mud at low tide.

The USS United States is in very sad shape.

But it's not just boats. We live in a nice historic district downtown. There is the odd building around that doesn't get maintenance and it shows. Brick hpgets wet, sills rot, sometimes pieces fall off. One otherwise million dollar house has been condemned as derelict and unsafe for years.

Quite a few years ago now one old guy had a bunch of old commercial buildings boarded up. Real eye sores. He got sues for their condition and refusal to do anything with them. One day a judge in the case was walking down the street and a bit fell off, killed him.

Per the thread title, you need a permit to own a boat in Australia and someone should have not permitted him?

don't go down that road!!! From what i have seen Australia is already the biggest Nanny state that I have ever experienced and i don't think that they need any more rules. If you wait long enough I am sure that some government will start to talk about forming a Royal commision or something to investigate and then maybe they will form a new agency and hire a special prosecutor to see how many people they can charge with an offence.

the wife and I saw this boat before christmas and she was in terrible shape. I thought at the time that it must be owned by the government due to it's location and we wondered how she could get so bad. Obviously she had no maintenance done to her for very many years. It was actually terrible to display her in such a public place.

At least the owner will have the means to clean her up as being over 15m I assume that he would have had to have the required 10mm liability insurance to cover pollution and wreck cleanup. I guess this is why they have to have all these rules over here.

Re: Some People Should Not Be Permitted To Own A Boat

Sounds to me like Mr. Dick's tall ship was nothing more than a cash cow for him. This is assuming the money he was spending came from government assistance and donations. One I read was he had spent $400,000 on restoration. With that much cash it is not too hard to see that the money didn't all go into the vessel but rather "administration costs"...if ya know what I mean.
Chances are if funding was stopped by the powers to be, he would have that boat up for sale if a jiffy.
