Can't get insurance? Article in Soundings Says why

Good article in Soundings :Trade Only about boat insurance and why some, particularly in Florida, can't get insurance. It also offers some ways to get insurance before you buy the boat. It's mostly about Florida, but I suppose it could apply in other states with the way climate is changing and affecting weather in those places.

For instance I have a classic 1972 Sea Ray. I have liability through BOATUS (actually it's a GEICO) policy but no coverage on the boat. This was hammered home in 2020 when some jacka** lost control of his boat and ran up on mine. Fortunately not too much damage, but he didn't have insurance and mine didn't cover it. So some repairs still haven't been made.

Anyway, It's hard enough to get insurance for a new boat, but harder to get it for an old boat.

Re: Can't get insurance? Article in Soundings Says why

Thanks. Somewhat recently Good Old Boat had an excellent article about insurance, wish I had saved it.

This year many people on my owner's group have complained about their insurance either being canceled due to their boat's age, or it was prohibitively expensive to renew. From everything I have read, insurance companies are blaming their rate increa$e$ on the huge influx of inexperienced boaters due to covid. I agree, there are too many newbies "out there" without charts or a clue. But it seems insurance companies can't differentiate between responsible boaters with well-maintained boats and ,,, um ,,, those other people "having a good time".
