Cutting across Lake Ontario

I’m considering taking the family across from Toronto to St.Catharines Marina on the weekend. We’re a 44 ft twin engine Symbol Cruiser - if the weather’s OK I’m guessing there should be no problem (other than lack of scenery) to going across the middle of the lake…? We’ll take our time and the shoreline on the way back. I’ve spent plenty of time around the edge of the lake - Toronto, Bay of Quinte, Coburg - but thought I might ask as I’ve never just ‘gone across’

Thoughts?

People do it all the time. Plan for a suitable weather window and I wouldn't have any big concerns. Just make sure the family won't be freaked out by spending some amount of time out of sight of land.

True enough - she’s a big body of water…good to think about…

From Toronto to St Catherines is only about 27 km [<15 nm], so about an hour, or less, for you.
Enjoy!

Good point, I tend to forget the lake gets narrow at that end. In that case, on a clear day you won't lose sight of land entirely.

Re: Cutting across Lake Ontario

We just did it last month on our 42 Symbol Sundeck with twin 330 Cummings engines - just used windy and picked a calm day.

Re: Cutting across Lake Ontario

TO to St Catherine's marina is about 51 km or 32 miles, you will only need a couple of quiet hours to cross.
On a reasonably clear day you can see the Toronto skyline from St Catharine's, so you will not lose sight of land.

Good luck
