I think you can do this in a van with minimal risk if you plan it right. There are expat Facebook groups for all the countries you would need to go through. Get on there, ask questions and they can help with planning.

I agree with others that sailing would have been a really bad idea.

Last I heard the Guatemala border was closed to air, sea and land. I look fwd to it opening, but don't hold your breath.

Official govt statement is that the airport will open Sept 18th. Non official is that land borders will open the same day.
