Barient #8 winches or winch bases

The composite bases on the original 1983 Barient 8P winches on my Freedom 21 are chipped / worn down to the point where the pawls don't stay in their slots. I need to at least replace the bases and wouldn't mind replacing the whole winches.

I've seen some newer winches that are the same size but have 5 mounting holes - I need ones with 4 holes.

I need the bases to be in relatively good condition - I don't really care about the rest of the parts.

Why not fill the holes with epoxy and drill fresh ones? Then pick whatever winches you want......

Following. I was checking out a 1977 boat today with 10pPwinches, and one of them has pawl issues with the handle. It is a little used secondary winch, but I suspect I will see some wear on the drum when I pull it apart.

Re: Barient #8 winches or winch bases

@mlydon That's my backup plan, but it's just a lot more work that I'm hoping to avoid. I'd much rather spend 20 minutes dropping in new winches than spend a couple of days filling holes, drilling new ones, epoxying those to protect the balsa, and building new backing plates. There's cost creep - if I go through that effort I'll start to convince myself I might as well spring for self-tailing.

Barient is history out of business for years.
A company in Australia bought the drawings nad makes some of the metal parts but that is about it.

Cheap(er) winches - ebay , but you need to be patient and wait for things to appear for sale. Hit or miss.

I'm in St Petersburg, FL. Hoping to pay around $40/winch since they're old and small, but I'm flexible.

Re: Barient #8 winches or winch bases

Sorry, just saw this - no rush! The winches I have are working OK with my jury-rigged (jerry-rigged?) fix of building up the worn plastic base with some stainless steel tape. Depends mostly on shipping cost.

Re: Barient #8 winches or winch bases

Any updates on this? I'm definitely still interested.

I considered just getting the bases fabricated but with the machining cost I may as well just buy new winches.
